The Girl in the Caf茅
- Richard Curtis
"I first had the idea for writing The
Girl in the Cafe three years ago, over lunch with the
wonderful French director, Patrice Leconte," says Richard
Curtis.
听
"During the three years since then, I always imagined
that The Girl in the Cafe would be a Hollywood movie, about a heroic
girl with gorgeous hair, sticking up for what is right, while having an
affair with either Jack Nicholson or Dustin Hoffman. Erin Brockovich was
somewhere in the back of my mind.
听
"But then reality interposed. I've worked for years raising
money for African charities and then was presented with the reality of
the fact that 2005 is a unique year in the battle against extreme poverty,
with a G8 conference planned with poverty at the top of the agenda.
听
"I suddenly remembered the film I had imagined over
that lunch - with a normal individual getting involved in the political
process and thought this might be the time to write it.
听
"I decided to try to make the film for television, a
first for me. I then had to face the reality that because I was working
on the campaign around the G8, I couldn't direct the film myself.
听
"An enormous piece of good fortune, as we then managed
to ensnare a much better director in the shape of David Yates, director
of the masterly State Of Play and Sex Traffic, and the next man into the
Harry Potter saddle.
听
"And finally, reality found its way into the film itself.
It isn't a Hollywood movie, though I hope it has quite a lot of the romance
and humour that my cinema films have aimed for.
听
"But it is the film I've been involved in of which I'm
most proud and I hope that one day very soon, real reality will catch
up, and our generation - that has the resources and knowledge to end extreme
poverty - will do just that."
