Radio 3 Awards for World Music to be announced on 10 April 2008

The winners of the 大象传媒 Radio 3 Awards for World Music will be announced at a winners' ceremony in London on Thursday 10 April 2008.

There will be live performances from several of this year's nominees including Algerian rebel rocker Rachid Taha, who will close the proceedings with an hour-long set, and from previous winner, Indian classical singer Kaushiki Chakrabarty.

Hosted by Radio 3's Mary Ann Kennedy, the ceremony will see some of the dazzling stars of world music receive their Planet in front of an audience of key figures from the world music industry, media and members of the public.

Many of the awards, presented for an outstanding album or live work during the past year, will be collected in person by the winning artists.

Other nominees for this year's awards include acclaimed Franco-Spanish pop star Manu Chao, desert bluesmen Tinariwen and Malian ngoni virtuoso Bassekou Kouyate.

Club friendly Balkan Beat Box, sublime Cape Verdean diva Mayra Andrade and South African diva Simphiwe Dana are also nominated.

Others include the culture-crossing Justin Adams & Juldeh Camara and the fascinating Sa Ding Ding.

Members of the public can apply for tickets for the event by calling the 大象传媒 Studio Audience line on 0870 901 1227 or online at bbc.co.uk/tickets.

Tickets are free and subject to availability. The lines open on Monday 24 March 2008 at 11.15pm with tickets offered on a first-come first-served basis.

The Awards For World Music: voting

There are 11 awards in total including the geographical categories: Africa, Americas, Middle East and North Africa, Asia Pacific and Europe.

There are awards for Culture Crossing, Newcomer and Club Global, Album of the Year, World Shaker Award and the Audience Award.

Nominees for all categories except for Album of the Year, the Audience Award and World Shaker Award are voted for by the 3,000 delegates to WOMEX, the annual World Music Expo.

An additional nomination in each of the geographical categories is chosen by music specialists at the 大象传媒 World Service.

The winners are then selected by the Awards for World Music jury (appointed and presided over by the 大象传媒, which does not have a vote in the process). Full details of the jury can be found on the Radio 3 Awards for World Music website.

The Album of the Year is voted on by a panel of critics assembled by fRoots magazine.

The Audience Award is chosen by the general public, who vote from the overall nominations list at bbc.co.uk/radio3.

World Shaker Award celebrates the work of an individual, outside the limelight, whose work has furthered the cause of world music. The award is decided by the Awards for World Music jury.

The Awards are a collaboration between 大象传媒 Radio 3, WOMEX, fRoots, Songlines, the Rough Guides and international music producers Serious.
