You got ninety-nine problems but your hoe ain’t one
We’re increasingly a nation of gardeners and vegetable growers…but when it comes to gardening tools, do we know our onions?
Councils are struggling to keep up with the demand for allotments and Instagram is seeing an increase in gardening related posts. Whether it’s down to stress relief or the threat of Brexit food shortages, we are increasingly becoming a nation into growing things.
Luckily, vintage gardening guru of Beechgrove, George Anderson, may be able to help fill in the potential skills gap with a new mini series on gardening tools selection.
He’s already covered spades and rakes with this week’s episode featuring a 60-second lowdown on gardening hoes.
First of all what even is a hoe? Well, it's a very handy gardening tool which can be used to keep on top of weeds.
Essentially it's a metal blade at the end of a long stick, or shaft, that can cut through weeds leaving them to wither in the sun.
The versatile tool can also be used to shape soil, plant seeds and harvest some crops.
George not only explains the different types of hoe and what they do, but also gives us an extremely important tip for purchasing hoes that may help you avoid back pain. If that wasn’t enough he lifts the lid on hoeing backwards and why it’s what all the cool kids are doing.
How to choose a hoe
George shares what to look for in a garden hoe.
