10 memorable moments from Joe Wicks' epic 24 Hour PE Challenge
Joe Wicks, the nation’s favourite virtual PE teacher, has completed an amazing 24 Hour PE Challenge, so far raising over £1.8 million for Children in Need.
Earlier this year, Joe helped the nation power their way through the first lockdown with his daily PE lessons. Taking to the 大象传媒’s Radio Theatre stage for his biggest mission yet, he’s been joined virtually by a host of celebrities, athletes, and Radio 2 presenters, helping him burn a whopping 1000 calories an hour.
Here are some of the many highlights, amazing surprises, and truly memorable moments, from Joe's high intensity day and night.
1. Sam Smith kicks off a day of celebrity workout buddies
Starting the 24 hour session on a high note, Joe Wicks was joined by his Instagram pal Sam Smith for a 10 minute bodyweight HIIT workout, including reverse lunges and sumo squats. “You’re a hero for doing this Joe,” said a grinning Sam, live from their living room in London.
In the middle of the workout Joe fanboyed over Sam, telling them how much he loved the new album before they discussed the joys of salad and salmon for dinner as well as Joe’s love of mango gin. Joe then revealed he accidentally sent Sam an excited voicemail meant for his mate after he managed to score tickets for one of Sam's early gigs in East London. “I remember that so well,” laughed Sam.
As they came to the end of the intense session Joe offered Sam free bed and board at his Santa Monica house. “I feel pumped!” exclaimed Sam at the end of the workout, finishing up by blowing Joe a kiss.
2. Kimberly Wyatt stretches Joe to his limits
Pussycat Dolls' Kimberly Wyatt became the boss as she taught Joe Wicks some ballet barre exercises over video link live from her home dance studio. “You’re so bendy!” called out Joe, who it turns out wasn’t quite as flexible as Kimberly. “I thought you were gonna make me do the splits then,” chuckled Joe as the Celebrity MasterChef winner led him in a series of some seriously wide squats.
As things took a Flashdance inspired turn, Joe revealed he’s been asked to go on Strictly Come Dancing numerous times. “I always say no because I’ve got no coordination!” Before she logged off, Kimberly finished up with some good news, revealing that Pussycat Dolls’ 2021 comeback tour currently looks set to go ahead.
3. On your bike
Joe was joined by the most successful female British Paralympian of all time, Dame Sarah Storey for a bicycle workout on Thursday lunchtime. Winner of 14 Gold medals, Sarah put Joe through his paces on his static bike while wearing her world champion jersey via video from her garage in Manchester.
“We need to find a jersey for you after this!” said Sarah, who kept Joe’s heart rate up by getting him cycling out of the saddle to the sounds of Lionel Richie’s All Night Long.
4. Frank Lampard makes Chelsea fan Joe swoon
Frank Lampard headed up a host of amazing special video messages offering support to Joe throughout the day. Rylan, Jessie Ware, David Walliams, Zoe Ball, Olly Murs and McFly also sent in their words of encouragement - as did astronaut Tim Peake via Twitter - but as a hardcore Chelsea fan, it was Frank who got Joe's pulse racing the fastest
5. It's a family affair
Throughout the 24 hours of the challenge, members of Joe’s family popped up on screen to provide him with some much needed motivation. We saw cameos from the whole Wicks clan, including his dad, brother, nephews and, as Joe neared the end of his superhuman effort, his mum Raquela and two kids Indie and Marley.
"I can't tell you how proud I am," Raquela told Zoe Ball. "What he's been doing is absolutely phenomenal."
There was also an emotional moment when Joe was joined onstage by one of his only physical guests. His wife Rosie surprised Joe by appearing in person as he entered the last hour on Friday morning. James Bay then serenaded the pair with their favourite song after James and Joe did a weights workout via video link.
6. When Louis met Joe
Two national treasures coming together for a good cause? That’s definitely what we got when Louis Theroux joined Joe Wicks for his challenge. The pair actually seem like best pals - Louis was a big follower of Joe’s lockdown workouts and has even appeared on his new mate’s podcast.
Louis joined Joe for a "mild korma" of a workout, coming live on Zoom from a hotel room in the US. He didn’t quite master the art of the camera angles though, as Joe put it: “I can see your wonderful derrière bouncing up and down.”
7. Sporty gets sporty
Joe Wicks may have inspired many to don gym clothes and learn what a burpee is over lockdown, but one person who has long been synonymous with all things Sporty is the Spice Girls’ Mel C.
The singer joined Joe for a 15 minute workout at 8pm on Thursday evening, telling Joe about the importance of young girls having the confidence to continue incorporating exercise into their daily routines after leaving school. Not only that, but she also treated us to her very own 'Sporty Spice Workout' too as the pair did a dance-off to Spice Up Your Life.
8. Superstar DJ... here we go
The iconic house DJ Roger Sanchez helped Joe power his way through the night by making a special 20 minute mix just for Joe.
You can listen to the Grammy Award winning DJ's mix here on Sounds which was aired on OJ Borg's late night show and helped Joe power his way through the wee small hours.
Speaking to OJ, Sanchez talked about his current workout routine of boxing and weights as well as how much fun making the mix was. "I crammed as much as I could in there!" he said. "I wanted to hone in on some really important house tracks."
He also had a message for Joe. "Everybody is in your corner... My man!"
9. Nothing like a dame
After falling ill with Covid-19 just 16 days ago, Olympian Dame Kelly Holmes told Joe that this was the first day that she felt well enough again to exercise.
"I'm glad to see you're recovering," Joe told her as the iconic pair of athletes did a core and floor video workout together.
10. He did it!
Joe Wicks breezed into the last few minutes of his challenge with the help of thousands of schoolkids, including one lucky primary school who joined him via video link, as well as Pudsey Bear.
Finishing on a 'silly billy' dance move, Joe then did a celebratory lap of the stage after the countdown finished before talking to Zoe Ball. "I feel so buzzed, full of adrenaline," said Joe, a man whose energy knows no bounds. "Captain serotonin!"
After hearing he'd raised over £1.5 million during the 24 hours - with donations still pouring in - Joe cartwheeled across the stage and was given a kiss on the cheek by his wife Rosie before he cuddled a Pudsey Bear toy. "Who knows, I may even be back next year!" he commented. He then headed off to his hotel across the road from the studio for a well deserved sleep! What a hero.
