An Litir Bheag 234

Chunnaic mi gobhair as t-samhradh.聽Chan eil mi a鈥 ciallachadh gobhair aig聽tuathanach. Tha mi a鈥 ciallachadh聽gobhair fhiadhaich anns a鈥 mhonadh.聽Bha mi a鈥 coiseachd ann am Fr矛th聽Leitir I霉. Bha mi ann an Gleann聽Bianasdail. Faisg air l脿imh bha Meallan聽Ghobhar. Chunnaic mi ceumannan anns聽an fhraoch. Bha an talamh cas. 鈥橲 iad聽gobhair a rinn na ceumannan.聽Bha an c霉 agam air thoiseach聽orm. Stad e. Bha e a鈥 coimhead air聽rudeigin. 鈥橲 e boc gobhair a bha ann.聽Bha am boc m貌r agus bha adharcan聽m貌ra air.聽Bha mi a鈥 leughadh rudeigin聽annasach mu ghobhair. Bha na seann聽daoine ag r脿dh gun robh gobhair ag ithe聽nathraichean. Tha seanfhacal againn a聽tha a-mach air sin. Chruinnich Alasdair聽MacNeacail an seanfhacal sin airson an聽leabhair aige 鈥淕aelic Proverbs鈥.聽Seo an seanfhacal: Cleas na聽goibhre 鈥檊 ith鈥 na nathrach, ga s矛or聽itheadh, 鈥檚 a鈥 s矛or thalach. The goat鈥檚聽trick is to eat the snake, eating away and聽still complaining. Cleas na goibhre 鈥檊聽ith鈥 na nathrach, ga s矛or itheadh, 鈥檚 a鈥櫬爏矛or thalach.聽Tha MacNeacail ag innse dhuinn聽gun robh na G脿idheil 鈥 ann an cuid de聽che脿rnaidhean co-dhi霉 鈥 dhen bheachd聽gun robh gobhair ag ithe nathraichean.聽An toiseach bha gobhar a鈥 stampadh air聽ceann nathrach. An uair sin bha e ag ithe聽na nathrach. Bha e a鈥 t貌iseachadh leis an聽earball. Fhad 鈥檚 a bha gobhar a鈥櫬燿猫anamh sin, bha e a鈥 d猫anamh fuaim.聽Bha e coltach ri bhith a鈥 talach no a鈥櫬爂earain.聽Bha mi ag iarraidh faighinn a-mach聽a bheil sin cl脿raichte ann an聽脿iteachan eile. Chaidh mi gu m脿thair-uisge聽an fhiosrachaidh. D猫 tha mi a鈥櫬燾iallachadh le sin? 鈥淭he wellspring of聽knowledge鈥. Seadh 鈥 an t-eadar-l矛on.聽Tha bhidiothan air an eadar-l矛on聽de nathraichean ag ithe ghobhar. Chan聽eil iad snog idir. Ach lorg mi aon聽chunntas de ghobhar a dh鈥檌th nathair.聽Tha fear anns na h-Innseachan. 鈥橲 e聽Mohammed Pasha an t-ainm a tha air.聽Bidh Mohammed a鈥 reic 猫isg.聽Bha gobhar aig Mohammed.聽Agus bha an gobhar ag ithe an 猫isg! Aon聽turas, a r猫ir Mhohammed, dh鈥檌th an聽gobhar nathair. 鈥橲 d貌cha gur e an fh矛rinn聽a tha anns an t-sean-fhacal!

The Little Letter 234

I saw goats in the summer. I don鈥檛聽mean a farmer鈥檚 goat. I mean wild聽goats on the hills.聽I was walking in the deer forest聽of Letterewe. I was in Glen Bianasdail.聽Close by there was Meallan聽Ghobhar [little rounded hill of the聽goats]. I saw tracks in the heather.聽The ground was steep. It is goats聽that made the paths.聽My dog was ahead of me. He聽stopped. He was looking at聽something. It was a billy goat. The聽billy goat was big and had big聽horns.聽I was reading an unusual thing聽about goats. The old people were聽saying that goats ate snakes. We聽have a proverb that concerns that.聽Alexander Nicolson collected that聽proverb for his book 鈥淕aelic聽Proverbs鈥.聽Here is the proverb: The goat鈥檚聽trick is to eat the snake, eating away聽and still complaining. The goat鈥檚聽trick is to eat the snake, eating away聽and still complaining. The goat鈥檚聽trick is to eat the snake, eating away聽and still complaining.聽Nicolson tells us that the Gaels聽鈥 in some places at least 鈥 were of聽the opinion that goats ate snakes. To聽begin with a goat was stamping on a聽snake鈥檚 head. Then it was eating the聽snake. It started with the tail. While聽the goat was doing that, it was聽making a noise. It was like [it was]聽complaining.聽I was wanting to find out if that聽is recorded in other places. I went to聽the wellspring of knowledge. What聽do I mean by that? 鈥淭he wellspring聽of knowledge鈥. Aye 鈥 the internet.聽There are videos on the聽internet of snakes eating goats.聽They鈥檙e not nice at all. But I found聽one account of a goat which ate a聽snake. There is a man in India. His聽name is Mohammed Pasha. Mohammed聽sells fish.聽Mohammed had a goat. And聽the goat was eating the fish! One聽time, according to Mohammed, the聽goat ate a snake. Perhaps the聽proverb was telling the truth!
