Litir 565: B脿s Chiuinlaoich

Bu mhath leam uirsgeul s貌nraichte innse dhuibh an t-seachdain seo. Tha e mu dheidhinn treun-laoch G脿idhealach air an robh Conlaoch mar ainm. 鈥橲 e Albannach a bh鈥 ann. Gaisgeach eireachdail treun le buinteanas don Eilean Sgitheanach.

鈥橲 e ainm an uirsgeil B脿s Chiuinlaoich no, ann am Beurla, The Death of Conlaoch. Tha e air innse an d脿 chuid ann an Alba agus 脠irinn. Tha mi a鈥 dol a st猫idheachadh mo sge貌il-sa air na chaidh a chruinneachadh 脿 beul-aithris ann an Alba.

Nuair a bha e na dhuine 貌g, dh鈥檉h脿g C霉 Chulainn a dhachaigh ann an Ulaidh. Th脿inig e a dh鈥橝lba, don Eilean Sgitheanach, far an do dh鈥檌onnsaich e sgilean sabaid aig a鈥 bhanrigh ghaisgeil, Sg脿thach. Bha ise a鈥 fuireach ann an Caisteal Dh霉n Sg脿thaich ann an Sl猫ite. Chithear an tobhta dhen chaisteal aice fhathast.

鈥橲 e treun-laoch a bh鈥 ann an C霉 Chulainn. Dh鈥檌onnsaich e bho Sg脿thach mar a chleachdadh e an gath-bolg no fiery dart. 鈥橲 e ball-airm iongantach marbhtach a bh鈥 anns a鈥 ghath-bholg. A bharrachd air a bhith na ghaisgeach le buill-airm, bha C霉 Chulainn tarraingeach do na boireannaich. Fhuair e dl霉th ri bana-ghaisgeach Albannach air an robh Aoife agus dh鈥檉h脿g e trom i. Ach thill e a dh鈥櫭坕rinn.

Mus do dh鈥檉halbh e, gheall e do dh鈥橝oife gun tilleadh e uaireigin agus gum p貌sadh e i. Ach cha do thill. B鈥 fheudar do dh鈥橝oife an gille aca a thogail leatha fh猫in. Chuir i 鈥淐onlaoch鈥 air a鈥 ghille mar ainm.

Fhuair an gille tr猫anadh bho a mh脿thair a mhair seachd bliadhna ann an D霉n Tuilm ann an ceann a tuath an Eilein Sgitheanaich. Agus mar a thachair do Ch霉 Chulainn roimhe, chuir e seachad 霉ine ann an D霉n Sg脿thaich ann an Sl猫ite. B鈥 e sin an t-脿ite a b鈥 ainmeile far an ionnsaicheadh treun-laoich 貌ga na sgilean a bhiodh a dh矛th orra air bl脿r a鈥 chatha.

Rinn Aoife cinnteach gum biodh a h-uile l霉th-chleas aig Conlaoch 鈥檚 a bh鈥 aig C霉 Chulainn. Ach dh鈥檉h脿g i aon rud a-mach a dh鈥檃ona-ghnothach. Cha do dh鈥檌onnsaich Conlaoch mar a chleachdadh e an gath-bolg. Rinn Aoife sin oir bha i ag iarraidh C霉 Chulainn a pheanasachadh airson a bhith a鈥 d猫anamh mealladh-d貌chais oirre.

Dh鈥檌arr i air Conlaoch dhol a dh鈥櫭坕rinn, gun a bhith ag innse do dhuine sam bith c貌 e. Thuirt i gun robh i ag iarraidh gun toireadh e C霉 Chulainn a dh鈥橝lba leis. Bha fios aice gum marbhadh C霉 Chulainn a mhac leis a鈥 ghath-bholg, agus gun cuireadh sin troimhe-ch猫ile e. B鈥 e sin an d矛oghaltas aice.

R脿inig Conlaoch 脠irinn. Thachair e ri Conall, oide Ch霉 Chulainn. Thug e a bhuill-airm bho Chonall agus chuibhrich e e. Chuala C霉 Chulainn mu dheidhinn agus th脿inig e.

Dh鈥檉haighnich e de Chonlaoch c貌 e. Dhi霉lt Conlaoch innse. Th貌isich an dithis air sabaid. Ach rinn C霉 Chulainn a鈥 ch霉is air Conlaoch leis a鈥 ghath-bholg. Nuair a bha e a鈥 b脿sachadh, dh鈥檌nns Conlaoch ainm do Ch霉 Chulainn. Bha fios aig C霉 Chulainn gun robh e air a mhac fh猫in a mharbhadh agus, gu dearbh, bha e troimhe-ch猫ile.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

Do any of you possess any tradition relating to the story in the text 鈥 鈥淭he Death of Conlaoch鈥? If you have had the story (or any other relating to Cuchullin or Sg脿thach in Scotland) passed down in your family in any way, I鈥檇 love to hear from you. Are parents and teachers in Skye, in particular, telling youngsters this story? If not, they should be 鈥 it鈥檚 part of their cultural heritage! In Sg脿thach, Aoife (the sister of Sg脿thach according to some) and her son Conlaoch we have three famous Sgitheanaich belonging to this mythic and heroic age of the Gaels. We have a strong tradition of Sg脿thach being in D霉n Sg脿thaich (Dunscaith) in Sleat but how strong is the tradition of Aoife being in Dun Tuilm (Duntulm) in Trotternish? If you have any information on this legend, please let me know.
