Litir 573: An t-Urr Alexander Pope
罢丑貌颈蝉颈肠丑 An t-Urr Alexander Pope mar mhinistear ann am Meaghrath ann an Gallaibh ann an seachd ceud deug, trithead 鈥檚 a ceithir (1734). Bha e anns an dreuchd sin fad ceathrad 鈥檚 a h-ochd bliadhna.
Mar a bha mi ag innse dhuibh an t-seachdain sa chaidh, 鈥檚 e duine foghainteach l脿idir a bh鈥 ann. Bhiodh e a鈥 toirt bata leis airson daoine a 鈥渂hrosnachadh鈥 a dh鈥檌onnsaigh na h-eaglaise. 鈥橲 e 鈥渁m b脿illidh鈥 a chanadh e ris a鈥 bhata.
Bha fear anns an sg矛re aig an robh baile fearainn. Bha boireannach a鈥 fuireach aige agus bha dithis chloinne aca, ach cha robh iad p貌sta. Latha a bha seo, nochd e mu choinneamh Seisean na h-Eaglaise. Thuirt Mgr Pope ris gun robh e na pheacach. Dh鈥檌arr am ministear air a pheacaidhean aideachadh anns an eaglais air an ath Sh脿baid. Agus dh鈥檌arr e air gealltainn gun cuireadh e e fh猫in fo lagh is 霉ghdarras na h-Eaglaise.
鈥淢us d猫an mi c脿il dhen t-se貌rsa,鈥 thuirt an duine, 鈥渇aodaidh sibh m鈥 fhiacail mu dheireadh a sp矛onadh 脿s mo bheul.鈥
鈥淐h矛 sinn,鈥 thuirt am ministear.
Dh鈥檃ontaich an Seisean gun rachadh tri霉ir de na h-猫ildearan as l脿idire gu taigh an tuathanaich madainn na S脿baid. Bheireadh iad air dhol don Eaglais.
Nuair a th脿inig madainn na S脿baid, rinneadh sin. Chuir na h-猫ildearan an tuathanach fo smachd. Chuingealaich iad e le r貌pan, agus thug iad air dhol don eaglais.
Nuair a r脿inig iad an eaglais, dh鈥檌arr Mgr Pope air na h-猫ildearan an tuathanach a cheangal ri being. Aig deireadh an t-searmoin thuirt e ris an duine bhon ch霉baid, 鈥淭huirt thu gum faodamaid an fhiacail mu dheireadh a sp矛onadh 脿s do bheul mus biodh tu far a bheil thu. Ach, a bhleigeird bhochd, c脿ite a bheil thu a-nis?!鈥 鈥橲 e ministear cruaidh a bh鈥 ann.
Bha Alexander Pope fada an aghaidh deoch l脿idir. Latha a bha seo, th脿inig an t猫 a bha a鈥 ruith an taigh-sheinnse thuige. Bha sianar choigreach a-staigh aice. Bha iad air cus 貌l agus bha iad a-nise a鈥 sabaid. Bha an t-eagal oirre gun d猫anadh iad sgrios.
Dh鈥檌arr am ministear oirre 脿radh a chur ri balla an taighe agus cuinneagan a l矛onadh le uisge. Chaidh e suas air a鈥 mhullach leis na cuinneagan, thug e air falbh gu le貌r dhen tughadh agus dh貌irt e an t-uisge air na drongairean a bha fodha. Th脿inig na drongairean a-mach, deiseil airson sabaid leis. Ach bha am ministear a鈥 feitheamh riutha air an talamh, agus 鈥渁m b脿illidh鈥 na l脿imh. Cha robh aon duine aca de貌nach aghaidh a thoirt air a鈥 mhinistear agus theich iad.
Tha st貌iridh eile ann cuideachd mu thuras a bha feadhainn ag 貌l ann am bothan faisg air an eaglais air an t-S脿baid. Dh鈥檌arr Mgr Pope orra sgaoileadh ach dhi霉lt iad. Bha dusan neach anns a鈥 ghr脿isg agus thilg fear dhiubh botal a dh鈥檌onnsaigh ceann a鈥 mhinisteir. Thug am ministear slaic mh貌r leis a鈥 bh脿illidh air ceann an fhir eile agus thuit e don talamh. Rinn e an aon rud air ceathrar no c貌ignear eile mus do sgaoil iad.
Tha e coltach gun do thagh Mgr Pope 猫ildearan a r猫ir cho l脿idir 鈥檚 a bha iad, chan ann a r猫ir cho diadhaidh 鈥檚 a bha iad! 鈥橲 e sin, co-dhi霉, an cli霉 aige. Ach dh鈥檉h脿g e d矛leab Gh脿idhlig Ghallach a tha inntinneach. Bheir sinn s霉il air sin an ath sheachdain.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach
罢丑貌颈蝉颈肠丑 An t-Urr Alexander Pope mar mhinistear...: Rev Alexander Pope started as a minister... Gaelic writers are often unsure as to whether or not to put a full stop to indicate an abbreviation, as there seems to a lack of unanimity on the matter in the English-speaking world (one sees Rev. and Rev). The latest edition of the Gaelic Orthographic Conventions (Oct 2009 鈥 or is it Oct. 2009?!) gives us some guidance. All the examples they give, with one exception, omit the full stop eg An t-Oll, An Dr agus Mgr 鈥 the exception being 脿颈谤. for no. (number), presumably to ensure there is no confusion with the preposition air.
Gnathas-cainnt na Litreach
