Litir 591: Bilidh
Tha mi airson sgeulachd thraidiseanta innse dhuibh. 鈥橲 e an t-ainm oirre 鈥淏ilidh鈥. Chaidh a cruinneachadh ann am Barraigh anns an naoidheamh linn deug. Tha mi an d貌chas gun c貌rd i ribh.
Bha mac aige air an robh Bilidh. Bhiodh Bilidh a鈥 goid rudan air daoine. Bhiodh e a鈥 goid air an duine-uasal faisg air l脿imh. Th脿inig an duine-uasal. Thuirt e ris an tuathanach gum bu ch貌ir dha ce脿ird ionnsachadh do a mhac. Cha bhiodh ce脿ird na b鈥 fhe脿rr na m猫irle.
听听听听听听听听听听听 Cha robh an tuathanach toilichte ach chuireadh fios air Bilidh. Dh鈥檉haighnich an duine-uasal de Bhilidh am biodh e de貌nach m猫irle ionnsachadh. Thuirt Bilidh gum bitheadh. Cha robh ce脿ird sam bith ann a b鈥 fhe脿rr a ch貌rdadh ris na m猫irle.
Ged nach robh athair toilichte, chuir e an gille aige an 貌rdugh airson falbh a dh鈥檌onnsachadh na m猫irle. Dh鈥檉halbh Bilidh. Choinnich e ri duine air an rathad. Dh鈥檉haighnich an duine c脿鈥 robh e a鈥 dol. Thuirt Bilidh gun robh e a鈥 dol a dh鈥檌onnsachadh na m猫irle agus gun robh maighstir a dh矛th air.
听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥淚s dona a鈥 che脿ird a tha thu a鈥 dol a dh鈥檌onnsachadh,鈥 ars an duine. Agus dh鈥檉halbh e.
听听听听听听听听听听听 Cha b鈥 fhada a chaidh Bilidh nuair a thachair e ri tri霉ir eile. Dh鈥檉haighnich iad c脿鈥 robh e a鈥 dol. Thuirt Bilidh gun robh e a鈥 dol a dh鈥檌onnsachadh na m猫irle agus gun robh maighstir a dh矛th air.
Chaidh iad gu taigh-seinnse. Bha an duine ag iarraidh na rudan a bu luachmhoire na bhroinn a ghoid. Bha r貌p aige. 鈥淣ise,鈥 thuirt e ri Bilidh, 鈥渢h猫id thusa s矛os an similear air an r貌p. Cuir a h-uile rud luachmhor suas an similear. An uair sin bheir mise thu fh猫in suas air an r貌p.
Air an oidhche, nuair a bha na daoine air a dhol a laighe, chaidh Bilidh air mullach an taigh-sheinnse. Leig a mhaighstir Bilidh s矛os air an r貌p. Nuair a bha Bilidh san r霉m, chuir e a h-uile rud luachmhor suas an r貌p. Ach theich am fear eile. Dh鈥檉h脿g e Bilidh sh矛os anns an t-se貌mar.
Cha robh fios aige d猫 dh猫anadh e. Sheall e mun cuairt. Lorg e seiche mairt. Bha adhaircean oirre. Chuir e timcheall air i. Th貌isich e air sgriachail air feadh an t-se貌mair.
Las i solas agus dh鈥檉hosgail i doras an t-se貌mair. Nuair a chunnaic i Bilidh le seiche mairt is adhaircean air, ghabh i eagal. Ruith i a-mach 脿s an r霉m. Ghlaodh i ri a maighstir.
鈥 ars a maighstir.
鈥淐hunnaic mi an Donas!
Bhruidhinn e ris an 鈥淒onas鈥. 鈥淒猫 chuir an seo thu?鈥 thuirt e ris.
听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥淚s tric a tha mi an seo,鈥 fhreagair Bilidh. 鈥淣uair a thig mi air an turas mu dheireadh, chan fh脿g mi fiach sn脿thaid agad.
An gabh thu leth-cheud nota?
Ach ma gheibh mi ceud, falbhaidh mi is cha tig mi tuilleadh.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach
Cha robh ce脿ird sam bith ann a b鈥 fhe脿rr a ch貌rdadh ris na 尘猫颈谤濒别: there was no trade which he would enjoy more than thieving. It鈥檚 another way of expressing a b鈥 fhe脿rr leis. Notice that in this type of expression the traditional Gaelic word order is different from English (in which the verb precedes the adverb). One might say a ch貌rdadh ris na b鈥 fhe脿rr na m猫irle (note the comparative form na) but it鈥檚 not as elegant or gn脿thasach. Here are some other examples with a mixture of tenses: B鈥 e sin an g猫am a b鈥 fhe脿rr a ch貌rd rium riamh; 鈥橲 e sin am f矛on as fhe脿rr a ch貌rdas rium le biadh Eadailteach; 鈥橲 e sin an rud a b鈥 fhe脿rr a ch貌rdadh ris a鈥 ch霉.
Gnathas-cainnt na Litreach
Bhiodh Bilidh a鈥 goid rudan air daoine: Billy would steal things from people [note the traditional usage of the preposition 鈥渁ir鈥 in this expression.
