Litir 654: D霉ghall Bochanan - P脿irt 1

Tha mi a鈥 dol a leughadh earrann 脿 seann leabhar G脿idhlig. 鈥橲 e f猫in-eachraidh a th鈥 ann. A bheil sibh ag aithneachadh an 霉ghdair?

听听听听听听听听听听听 Bha mi cho sona 鈥檚 gun do ghineadh mi bho ph脿rantan diadhaidh sa bhliadhna 1716, a rinn na h-uile dh矛cheall a chum mo thogail suas ann an eagal an Tighearna, agus mo dhleastanas a theagasg dhomh gu tr脿thail; gu h-脿raidh mo mh脿thair chaomh a dh鈥檌onnsaich dhomh 霉rnaigh a dh猫anamh cho luath 鈥檚 a b鈥 urrainn mi labhairt鈥

听听听听听听听听听听听 C貌 am fear a sgr矛obh an leabhar? Fear a bha diadhaidh agus ainmeil ri a linn. 鈥橲 e b脿rd a bh鈥 ann, a bhiodh a鈥 sgr矛obhadh b脿rdachd spioradail Gh脿idhlig. 鈥橲 e an t-ainm a bh鈥 air D霉ghall Bochanan. Th脿inig Bochanan don Tighearna tr脿th na bheatha, mar a tha e a鈥 m矛neachadh anns an leabhar aige.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Mar as fhe脿rr mo chuimhne, air dhomh a bhith eadar 肠霉颈驳 is 蝉猫 bliadhna a dh鈥檃ois, chaidh mi a-mach aon D貌mhnach gun fhios do mo mh脿thair, agus chuir mi seachad greis de th矛m ri cluich amaideach; agus ged a phill mi dhachaigh mun deach m鈥 ionndrainn, gidheadh bha m鈥 inntinn l脿n de dh鈥檜abhas agus de dh矛teadh cogais airson bristeadh na S脿baid. Agus, air an oidhche sin fh猫in, an d猫idh dhomh dol a laighe agus cadal, bha mi fo mh貌r-uabhas leis a鈥 bhruadar seo a leanas: - Bhruadair mi gun do thaisbean an Tighearn Iosa e fh猫in domh ann am m貌r-chorraich, agus gun tuirt e gum biodh e diolte dh矛om airson bristeadh a Sh脿baid.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Air dhomh d霉sgadh, ghabh mi aithreachas airson an uilc a chuir mi an gn矛omh; agus chuir mi romham nach d猫anainn a leithid gu br脿th tuillidh. Uime sin, th貌isich mi ri 霉rnaigh na bu trice na bu ghn脿th leam a dh猫anamh roimhe sin: oir roimh an 脿m seo, cha d鈥 rinn mi 霉rnaigh ach mar a cho-猫ignicheadh mo mh脿thair mi gu sin a dh猫anamh. Ach a-nis th貌isich mi air 霉rnaigh gun neach air bith a鈥 cur 矛mpidh orm.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Anns na beagan Litrichean romhainn, tha mi a鈥 dol a thoirt s霉il air eachdraidh-beatha Dh霉ghaill Bhochanain, agus mar a rinn D霉ghall tuairisgeul oirre na Gh脿idhlig ghn脿thasach fh猫in. Bhuineadh e don Iomaire Riabhach no Strathyre faisg air Both Chuidir ann an Siorrachd Shruighlea. Chan e a-mh脿in gur e b脿rd spioradail a bh鈥 ann, ach gun do chuidich e an t-Urramach Seumas Sti霉bhart 脿 Cill Fhinn ann a bhith ag eadar-theangachadh an Tiomnaidh Nuaidh gu G脿idhlig.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Nuair a bha e sia bliadhna a dh鈥檃ois, chaochail m脿thair Dh霉ghaill no, mar a chuireas e san leabhar e, 鈥榯hoilich an Tighearna mo mh脿thair a thoirt air falbh 脿s an t-saoghal seo鈥. Goirid an d猫idh sin bha aislingean aige a thug buaidh mh貌r air. Cuiridh mi cr矛och air an Litir seo leis an tuairisgeul aige: 鈥 th貌isich an Tighearn鈥 air m鈥 fhiosrachadh le seallaidhean uabhasach; aislingean anns an oidhche a chuir eagal ro mh貌r orm. Bhruadair mi gu tric gun t脿inig latha a鈥 Bhreitheanais agus gun robh Iosa air teachd anns na ne貌il a chum breith a thoirt air an t-saoghal, agus gun robh gach uile shluagh air cruinneachadh fa chomhair a chathrach, agus gun do thearb e iad nan d脿 bhuidheann, a h-aon air a l脿imh dheis agus an t-aon eile air a l脿imh chl矛; agus chunnaic mi mi fh猫in maille ri buidheann eile air mo dh矛teadh a chum losgadh siorraidh.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

air dhomh a bhith eadar 肠霉颈驳 is 蝉猫 bliadhna a dh鈥檃ois: after I鈥檇 reached between five and six years of age. As a Gaelic learner you鈥檒l likely have been told that 鈥榝ive, six鈥 is 肠貌颈驳, sia. But, if you look in old Gaelic dictionaries you鈥檒l find that another common form of 肠貌颈驳 is 肠霉颈驳, and that 蝉猫 is an alternative form of sia. The southern and eastern dialects in which these forms were common have largely been lost, but 蝉猫 is still encountered in Argyll. 颁霉颈驳 and 蝉猫 are the forms in Irish Gaelic.
