Coilltean-calltainn - P脿irt 1

O chionn bliadhna no dh脿, chuir mi seachad madainn ann an 肠辞颈濒濒别-肠丑苍貌. Uill, leis an fh矛rinn innse, cha robh m貌ran chnothan innte. Mar sin, 鈥檚 d貌cha gum bu ch貌ir dhomh coille-challtainn a ghabhail oirre. Tha an d脿 chuid 鈥 肠辞颈濒濒别-肠丑苍貌 agus coille-challtainn 鈥 a鈥 ciallachadh coille anns a bheil gu le貌r de chraobhan calltainn. Ann am Beurla, 鈥檚 e hazel wood a chanas daoine rithe.

听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥橲 toigh leam coilltean-calltainn agus bha an t猫 sin gu math br猫agha. Ach bha mi ann airson adhbhar, a bharrachd air b貌idhchead na coille fhaicinn. Bha mi fh矛n is caraid dhomh c貌mhla ri t猫 de luchd-siubhail na G脿idhealtachd 鈥 Easaidh Sti霉bhart. Tha Easaidh ainmeil airson a bhith ag aithris sgeulachdan G脿idhlig, feadhainn dhiubh a bhiodh a seanair, Ailidh Dall, ag innse. Bho 脿m gu 脿m, bidh i a鈥 sealltainn do dhaoine mar a bhiodh an luchd-siubhail a鈥 togail an cuid theantaichean. Bha iad a鈥 cleachdadh shlatan calltainn.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Agus, ged nach ann leis an luchd-siubhail a tha na coilltean-calltainn, chan e m猫irle a th鈥 ann a bhith a鈥 toirt shlatan calltainn a-mach asta. Mar a chanas an seanfhacal ainmeil, a tha cho f矛or 鈥檚 a ghabhas 鈥 breac 脿 linne, sl脿t 脿 coille, 鈥檚 fiadh 脿 fireach 鈥 m猫irle nach do ghabh duine riamh n脿ir鈥 aiste.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Bha Easaidh a鈥 fuireach ann an Luirg nuair a bha i 貌g. Taobh a-muigh a鈥 bhaile, bha coille-challtainn far am biodh an luchd-siubhail a鈥 buain shlatan airson an cuid theantaichean. Bha iad a鈥 faighinn cead airson sin. Ach, an latha taobh Loch Nis, chuimhnich sinn air an t-seanfhacal 鈥 breac 脿 linne, slat 脿 coille鈥!

听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥橲 e as coireach gun robhar a鈥 cleachdadh calltainn, seach slatan craoibhe eile, gu bheil calltainn nas fhasa a l霉badh, agus nas fhasa car a chur ann. Bha sinn anns a鈥 choille anns a鈥 Ch猫itean. Shaoil mi gur d貌cha gur e sin an t-脿m as fhe脿rr sa bhliadhna airson slatan a l霉badh, nuair a tha s霉gh ag 猫irigh as t-earrach. Ach bha mi ce脿rr. Dh鈥檌nns Easaidh dhomh gur ann aig deireadh na bliadhna a bhiodh iad a鈥 buain nan slatan calltainn oir cha robh uiread de sh霉gh anns na craobhan an uair sin.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Bhiodh iad a鈥 coimhead airson slatan d矛reach gun char, feadhainn a bha tiugh gu le貌r airson an canabhas a chumail suas ach gun a bhith ro thiugh airson l霉badh gu furasta. An uair sin, bhiodh na slatan air an seatadh, mar a chanadh iad. Bhiodh iad a鈥 cur an d脿rna cinn dheth san talamh 鈥 an ceann a bu tighe. Bhiodh iad a鈥 cur a鈥 chinn eile, an ceann caol, ann an eag ann an g脿rradh, le l霉b ann. Mar a bhiodh an 霉ine a鈥 dol seachad, bhiodh iad a鈥 cur l霉b na bu mhotha is na bu mhotha anns an t-slait gus am biodh an cumadh ceart oirre. Bhiodh an gnothach gu l猫ir a鈥 toirt beagan mh矛osan. Bhiodh an t-slat deiseil airson a dhol air an rathad as t-samhradh.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Ann an cuid de dh鈥櫭爄teachan, bhiodh daoine a鈥 d猫anamh preasarlach no preas-choille de choilltean-calltainn. An e sin an se貌rsa coille anns an robh Easaidh a鈥 faighinn a slatan? Dh鈥檌nns i dhomh nach e. Agus tha a鈥 cheist air 猫irigh 鈥 an robh na G脿idheil a鈥 d猫anamh phreasarlach de choilltean-calltainn uiread 鈥檚 a bha sinn a鈥 smaoineachadh? Bheir sinn s霉il air a鈥 cheist sin an-ath-sheachdain.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

肠辞颈濒濒别-肠丑苍貌: literally 鈥榥ut wood鈥, meaning 鈥榟azel wood鈥 (the nuts most highly valued by the Gael). 颁苍貌 is here in its old genitive plural guise, being the same as the nominative singular (but lenited without the article), so 肠辞颈濒濒别-肠丑苍貌 means 鈥榳ood of nuts鈥. However, I made the statement cha robh m貌ran chnothan innte 鈥榯here weren鈥檛 many nuts in it鈥 and I鈥檝e used the form chnothan as the genitive plural here, as it is the form likely to be used by modern Gaelic-speakers (the same as the nominative plural but lenited), except in phrases like 肠辞颈濒濒别-肠丑苍貌 that preserve a slightly archaic form. Another compound noun for 鈥榟azel wood鈥 is coille-challtainn 鈥榳ood of hazel鈥. Calltainn is lenited, not because it is an indefinite genitive plural but because it鈥檚 acting like an adjective qualifying the feminine noun coille.

Seanfhacal na Litreach

breac 脿 linne, sl脿t 脿 coille, 鈥檚 fiadh 脿 fireach 鈥 m猫irle nach do ghabh duine riamh n脿ir鈥 aiste: a salmon from the pool, a stick from the wood and a deer from the hill 鈥 theft that never shamed a man. In some dialects breac is the salmon, although it more commonly represents the brown trout.
