Litir 706: Beathaichean, a chaidh 脿 bith, air mapaichean na h-Alba - P脿irt 4

An-uiridh, dh鈥檉hoillsich luchd-rannsachaidh eun p脿ipear air an fhianais ann an ainmean-脿ite air eachdraidh is sgaoileadh iolairean ann am Breatainn agus 脠irinn. Tha tr矛 se貌rsaichean iolaire ann 鈥 an iolaire-bhuidhe, an iolaire-mhara agus an iolair-uisge. Tha an iolaire-bhuidhe air a bhith ann bho shean. Chaidh an iolaire-mhara agus an iolair-uisge 脿 bith ann an Alba. Th脿inig an iolair-uisge air ais le a toil fh猫in. Ach 鈥檚 e mac-an-duine a thug an iolaire-mhara air ais.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Choimhead an luchd-rannsachaidh air ainmean mar iolaire is 蹿矛辞谤-别耻苍 ann an G脿idhlig, eryr ann an Cuimris, er ann an C貌rnais, erne ann am Beurla is Albais, 酶谤苍 ann an Lochlannais agus eagle ann am Beurla. Ach feumar a bhith faiceallach. Tha a leithid Eaglesfield a鈥 tighinn bho eglwys no eccles, faclan ann an Cuimris agus san t-Seann Bheurla airson 鈥榚aglais鈥. Agus chan eil Gleneagles co-cheangailte idir ri iolairean 鈥 tha e a鈥 tighinn bhon Gh脿idhlig Gleann Eagas.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Bha an luchd-rannsachaidh a鈥 coimhead a-mh脿in air an iolaire-mhara is iolaire-bhuidhe. Ach, mas e d矛reach eagle no erne no iolaire a th鈥 anns an ainm, ciamar a bhios fios againn d猫 an se貌rsa a bhathar a鈥 ciallachadh? Sin far an robh na h-eag-e貌laichean a鈥 cuideachadh. Bidh iolairean-mara a鈥 neadachadh nas fhaisge air a鈥 chladach air talamh nas 矛sle nan t猫ile.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Rinn iad co-dh霉nadh mar seo: Nam biodh an t-ainm aig 脿irde os cionn na mara na b鈥 矛sle na d脿 cheud meatair, taobh a-staigh deich cilemeatair bho uisge, 鈥檚 e an iolaire-mhara a bha e ag ainmeachadh. Nam biodh an t-脿ite c貌rr is ceud gu leth meatair os cionn na mara, le talamh 脿rd faisg air l脿imh, 鈥檚 e iolaire-bhuidhe a bhiodh ann 鈥 coma gun robh uisge faisg no nach robh. Eadar ceud gu leth is d脿 cheud meatair, cha robh e soilleir d猫 an se貌rsa a bh鈥 ann.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Lorgadh c貌rr is seachd ceud ainm. B鈥 e a鈥 Gh脿idhlig an c脿nan a bu mhotha san robh iad 鈥 aig d脿 cheud, seachdad 鈥檚 a sia (276). Ann an G脿idhlig bha an iolaire-bhuidhe na bu phailte sna h-ainmean, le c貌rr is an d脿 thrian dhiubh. Ach nuair a bha a h-uile c脿nan air a thoirt a-steach, bha an iolaire-mhara beagan na bu phailte na 鈥檔 iolaire-bhuidhe.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Leis an fhiosrachadh gu l猫ir mu na h-e貌in, rinn an luchd-rannsachaidh tomhas air an 脿ireimh de gach se貌rsa ann am Breatainn is 脠irinn anns a鈥 bhliadhna c貌ig ceud AC 鈥 eadar m矛le is m矛le gu leth paidhir dhen iolaire-bhuidhe agus eadar ochd ceud is m矛le 鈥檚 ceithir cheud dhen iolaire-mhara. Bha iad m貌ran na bu phailte an uair sin na tha iad a-nise.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Gheall mi an t-seachdain sa chaidh gun cuirinn iongnadh oirbh le ainm-脿ite anns a bheil beathach, a chaidh 脿 bith, air ainmeachadh. Agus seo e. Ann an ceann a deas Eilean Bh貌id, tha 脿ite ann air a bheil Beaver Wood. Seadh, Beaver. 鈥橲 e an t-aon 脿ite as aithne dh貌mhsa ann an Alba far a bheil am b矛obhair air ainmeachadh air a鈥 mhapa.

听听听听听听听听听听听 An robh b矛obhairean uaireigin be貌 ann? Bha! Ach 鈥 bha iad air an toirt a-steach le Marcuis Bh貌id anns na seachdadan dhen naoidheamh linn deug. Bha iad soirbheachail airson co-dhi霉 co-dhi霉 deich bliadhna agus an uair sin chaidh iad 脿 bith. Chan eil e soilleir idir d猫 thachair dhaibh. Ach tha an gnothach air a chuimhneachadh air mapa Eilean Bh貌id chun an latha an-diugh.

Abairtean na Litreach

dh鈥檉hoillsich luchd-rannsachaidh eun p脿ipear : ornithological researchers published a paper; fianais ann an ainmean-脿ite air eachdraidh is sgaoileadh iolairean: evidence in place names on the history and spread of eagles; air ais le a toil fh猫in: back under its own devices; feumar a bhith faiceallach: one must be careful; a鈥 coimhead a-mh脿in: only looking at; d猫 an se貌rsa a bhathar a鈥 ciallachadh?: what type was meant?; sin far an robh na h-eag-e貌laichean a鈥 cuideachadh: that鈥檚 where the ecologists helped; a鈥 neadachadh nas fhaisge air a鈥 chladach: nesting closer to the shore; air talamh nas 矛sle nan t猫ile: on lower ground than the other one; na b鈥 矛sle na d脿 cheud meatair: lower than 200 metres; le talamh 脿rd faisg air l脿imh: with high ground close by; lorgadh seachd ceud ainm: 700 names were found; c貌rr is an d脿 thrian dhiubh: more than two-thirds of them; eadar m矛le is m矛le gu leth paidhir dhen iolaire-bhuidhe: between 1,000 and 1,500 pairs of golden eagles; m貌ran na bu phailte an uair sin: much more numerous then; gheall mi gun cuirinn iongnadh oirbh: I promised that I would surprise you; an t-aon 脿ite as aithne dh貌mhsa far a bheil am b矛obhair air ainmeachadh: the one place I know where the beaver is named; air an toirt a-steach le Marcuis Bh貌id: introduced by the Marquis of Bute; soirbheachail airson co-dhi霉 co-dhi霉 deich bliadhna: successful for a decade at the very least; chan eil e soilleir idir d猫 thachair dhaibh: it鈥檚 not at all clear what happened to them.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

coma gun robh uisge faisg no nach robh: regardless of whether water was close by or not. Coma is a great word 鈥 it can mean 鈥榰nconcerned, indifferent, uncaring鈥 and is used in a variety of idiomatic constructions. Tha mi coma 鈥 I couldn鈥檛 care less. Tha e coma d猫 thachras 鈥 he doesn鈥檛 care what happens. Tha i coma dheth 鈥 she doesn鈥檛 like it. Coma leat 鈥 don鈥檛 worry about it, never mind. Is coma leinn 鈥 it makes no odds to us. In the example in the Litir the assertive verb 鈥榠蝉鈥 is understood but not expressed. Being strictly grammatical, I might have said bu choma gun robh uisge faisg no nach robh but I was being idiomatic (and slightly lazy!)

Gn脿thas-cainnt na Litreach

rinn an luchd-rannsachaidh tomhas air an 脿ireimh de gach se貌rsa ann am Breatainn is 脠irinn: the researchers estimated the number of each type in Britain and Ireland.
