Litir 724: Naomh Dhubhthaich

Aig deireadh na Litreach mu dheireadh, chuir mi ceist oirbh 鈥 d猫 na h-e貌in a tha ag innse gum bi sneachd ann nuair a nochdas iad ann an achaidhean? 鈥橲 e am fuasgladh, a r猫ir nan seann daoine, faoileagan. Tha abairt ann 鈥 faoileagan manadh an t-sneachda, scaragan manadh an uisge 鈥榮eagulls foretell snow, kittiwakes foretell rain鈥. F脿gaidh mi e agaibhse co-dhi霉 tha e ceart no nach eil.听B鈥 e Leabhar 脵rnaighean Obar Dheathain, The Aberdeen Breviary, a鈥 chiad leabhar m貌r a chaidh a chur an cl貌 ann an Alba. Bha sin ann an D霉n 脠ideann ann an c貌ig ceud deug is deich (1510). Carson a tha ceangal aig an leabhar do dh鈥橭bar Dheathain, ma-th脿? Uill, 鈥檚 e Easbaig a鈥 bhaile sin, Uilleam Elphinstone, a bh鈥 air c霉l a鈥 phr貌iseict.Tha an leabhar pr矛seil. Tha e l脿n 霉rnaighean a dh猫anadh sagartan aig diofar amannan tron latha agus air diofar l脿ithean tron bhliadhna. A bharrachd air sin, tha cunntasan ann de dh鈥檈achdraidh-bheatha nan naomh a tha co-cheangailte ri Alba.听Tha d霉il gun do sgr矛obh Elphinstone fh猫in cuid dhen teacsa. Bha amas aige. Bha e a鈥 d猫anamh cinnteach gun robh f猫in-aithne Albannach aig an Eaglais ann an Alba, fa leth bhon Eaglais ann an Sasainn. Tha sinn a鈥 bruidhinn mu 脿m ron Ath-leasachadh. 鈥橲 ann aig an Eaglais Chaitligich a bha smachd fhathast ann an Alba is Sasainn.Tha an leabhar ag innse dhuinn mu Naomh Dhubhthaich, aig a bheil ceangal l脿idir do Bhaile Dhubhthaich ann an Ros an Ear. Rinn e a chiad mh矛orbhail nuair a bha e d矛reach na ghille 貌g. Chuir a thidsear gu ce脿rdach e, a dh鈥檌arraidh 猫ibhleagan airson teine a chur thuige. Thug an gobha na h-猫ibhleagan don ghille na uchd. A dh鈥檃indeoin sin, thug Dubhthach air ais do a thidsear iad, agus cha robh comharra de losgadh air a chuid aodaich.Turas eile, thugadh p矛os muicfhe貌la le f脿inne 貌ir innte do dheisciobal Dhubhthaich 鈥 airson a thoirt do Dhubhthach fh猫in. Stad an deisciobal ann an cladh airson 霉rnaighean a dh猫anamh dhaibhsan a bh鈥 aig fois an sin. Th脿inig clamhan-gobhlach a-nuas. Ghoid an t-eun an fhe貌il agus am f脿inne agus dh鈥檉halbh e leotha gu coille air taobh thall abhainn.听听听听听听听听听听听听听听 Bha an t-eagal air an deisciobal. D猫 chanadh Dubhthach? Cha robh c脿il air a shon ach innse dha na thachair. Rinn Dubhthach 霉rnaigh. Goirid 脿s d猫idh sin, thill an clamhan-gobhlach leis an fhe貌il agus am f脿inne. Ghabh Dubhthach am f脿inne dha fh猫in agus thug e an fhe貌il air ais don chlamhan.

听听听听听听听听听听听听听听 Tha st貌iridh eile co-cheangailte ri baile Dh貌rnaich ann am Machair Chat. Tha D貌rnach gu math faisg air Baile Dhubhthaich. Bhathar a鈥 marbhadh beathach mairt air f猫ill naoimh 鈥 airson an fhe貌il a thoirt do na daoine bochda. 鈥楥貌 bheir a chuid do Dhubhthach?鈥 thuirt fear. 鈥楳ise,鈥 fhreagair cl猫ireach.

听听听听听听听听听听听听听听 Ge-t脿, bha stoirm mh貌r ann 鈥檚 cha robh sgeul air a鈥 ghealaich. Bha an oidhche dubh dorch. Bha an t-eagal air a鈥 chl猫ireach an taigh fh脿gail oir cha robh solas aige. Ach, leis gun robh e air earbsa a chur ann an Naomh Dhubhthaich, dh鈥檉h脿g e an taigh le p矛os fe貌la air p貌la. D猫 thachair ach gun deach an fhe貌il na leus, a鈥 soilleireachadh an rathaid don chl猫ireach. D矛reach t猫 de na m矛orbhailean a chuireadh 脿s leth Naomh Dhubhthaich.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

The town of Tain in Easter Ross possibly gets its English name from a pre-Celtic river name. Its Gaelic name, Baile Dhubhthaich, means 鈥楽t Duthac鈥檚 town鈥 and commemorates Dubhthach (St Duthac), who also gave his name to Loch Dubhthaich (Loch Duich) on the west coast. By late medieval times, a cult of pilgrimage had developed for Duthac, and many people, including some Scottish kings, would make the pilgrimage to Tain from the south, often employing ferry crossings at Ardersier and Cromarty.
