Litir 778: Turas a dh鈥橝lba Nuaidh - P脿irt 1

A bheil sibh e貌lach air a鈥 Gh脿idhealtachd? Tha a鈥 cheist s矛mplidh ach 鈥檚 d貌cha nach eil an fhreagairt buileach cho s矛mplidh. D猫 th鈥 anns a鈥 Gh脿idhealtachd an-diugh? Ma tha barrachd luchd-labhairt na G脿idhlig air sr脿id ann an Glaschu na tha ann an, can, Tairbeart Loch F矛ne, am bu ch貌ir gabhail ris an t-sr脿id sin mar 鈥楪h脿idhealtachd鈥? Agus d猫 mu dheidhinn 脿iteachan a bha uaireigin G脿idhealach, ach anns a bheil gl猫 bheag dhen ch脿nan an-diugh? C脿ite a bheil a鈥 Gh脿idhealtachd a鈥 t貌iseachadh agus a鈥 cr矛ochnachadh?

听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥橲 e sin cuspair deasbaid airson latha eile. Ach bha mi mothachail do na h-脿iteachan anns an robh mi far a bheil G脿idhlig air a bruidhinn 鈥 ann an Alba, 脠irinn agus Eilean Mhanainn. Tha mi air a bhith air feadh G脿idhealtachd na h-Alba. Bha mi anns a鈥 chuid mh貌ir de Gh脿idhealtachdan na h-脠ireann. Agus bha mi am measg nan G脿idheal ann an Eilean Mhanainn.

听听听听听听听听听听听 A dh鈥檃indeoin sin, bha mi riamh dhen bheachd nach robh mo thuigse de shaoghal nan G脿idheal coileanta, oir bha 脿ite G脿idhealach eile ann far nach robh mi. Chan eil a鈥 Gh脿idhealtachd sin anns an Roinn E貌rpa. Tha i ann an taobh sear Chanada. Bidh fios agaibh d猫 an t-脿ite a tha mi a鈥 ciallachadh 鈥 Alba Nuadh. Agus tha mi toilichte a r脿dh gun robh mi ann o chionn ghoirid. Ch貌rd an t-脿ite rium glan.

听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥橲 iomadh 矛omhaigh a nochdas ann an s霉il mo chuimhne nuair a tha mi a鈥 beachdachadh air an turas agam. 鈥橲 i t猫 dhiubh rudeigin a thachair air a鈥 mhadainn mu dheireadh agam ann am pr矛omh bhaile na m貌r-roinne, Halifax. Bha mi cuide ri companach aig a bheil deagh Gh脿idhlig, agus a dh鈥檕braicheas airson a鈥 ch脿nain ann an Alba Nuaidh. Bha sinn a鈥 gabhail bracaist c貌mhla ann an taigh-貌sta.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Dh鈥櫭╥rich mi airson bobhla mheasan is iogairt fhaighinn. Nuair a thill mi, bha mo chompanach a鈥 bruidhinn ri t猫-fhrithealaidh nam b貌rd 鈥 t猫 貌g. Agus d猫 an c脿nan anns an robh iad a鈥 bruidhinn? A鈥 Gh脿idhlig! Bha agam ri r脿dh rium fh矛n 鈥 鈥楥han eil thu ann an Alba, a bhalaich, ach ann an d霉thaich ch猫in!鈥

听听听听听听听听听听听 Uill, feumaidh mi r脿dh nach robh Alba Nuadh mar dh霉thaich ch猫in. Uaireannan, nuair a bha mi am measg nan G脿idheal, bha mi a鈥 faireachdainn na bu chofhurtaile na bhithinn ann am m貌ran sg矛rean Gallta ann an Alba. Bhruidhinn mi G脿idhlig gu le貌r ann. Agus 鈥檚 iomadh duine ris an do thachair mi a bha b脿igheil ris a鈥 ch脿nan oir bha i aig p脿rant no seana-ph脿rant.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Cha robh an t猫 a bha a鈥 frithealadh nam b貌rd buileach fileanta ann an G脿idhlig. Ach tha a piuthar faisg air a bhith fileanta. Agus tha a br脿thair gu tur fileanta.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Tha 矛omhaigh eile a鈥 tighinn gu s霉il mo chuimhne fhad 鈥檚 a tha mi a鈥 sgr矛obhadh seo. Bha mi ri taobh an rathaid ann an Eilean Cheap Bhreatainn. Bha mi air an c脿r a stad airson dealbh a thogail de shoidhne dh脿-ch脿nanach. Gu h-脿rd bha 鈥楲ong Point鈥 oirre. Agus gu h-矛osal 鈥楢n Rubha Fada鈥.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Bha am post a鈥 l矛bhrigeadh litrichean. Chuir e uinneag a charbaid s矛os. 鈥楧o you have the Gaelic?鈥 dh鈥檉haighnich e. 鈥楾ha gu le貌r,鈥 fhreagair mise ann an G脿idhlig. Agus th脿inig g脿ire mh貌r air aodann. B鈥 i a鈥 Gh脿idhlig pr矛omh ch脿nan a ph脿rantan agus thuig e mi. 鈥橲 iomadh turas a thachair rudan mar sin dhomh ann an Alba Nuaidh.

Abairtean na Litreach

barrachd luchd-labhairt na G脿idhlig air sr脿id ann an Glaschu: more Gaelic-speakers on a street in Glasgow; c脿ite a bheil a鈥 Gh脿idhealtachd a鈥 t貌iseachadh agus a鈥 cr矛ochnachadh?: where does the Gaidhealtachd begin and end?; mothachail do na h-脿iteachan anns an robh mi: aware of the places I had been in; a dh鈥檃indeoin sin, bha mi riamh dhen bheachd nach robh mo thuigse de shaoghal nan G脿idheal coileanta: despite that, I was always of the opinion that my understanding of the world of the Gaels was not complete; 鈥檚 iomadh 矛omhaigh a nochdas ann an s霉il mo chuimhne: many an image appears in my mind鈥檚 eye; 鈥檚 i t猫 dhiubh rudeigin a thachair air a鈥 mhadainn mu dheireadh agam: one of them is something that happened on my last morning; pr矛omh bhaile na m貌r-roinne: the capital of the province; a dh鈥檕braicheas airson a鈥 ch脿nain: who works for the language; airson bobhla mheasan is iogairt fhaighinn: to get a bowl of fruit and yoghurt; t猫-fhrithealaidh nam b貌rd: the waitress; mar dh霉thaich ch猫in: like a foreign country; na bu chofhurtaile na bhithinn ann am m貌ran sg矛rean Gallta: more comfortable than I would be in many Lowland areas;听 b脿igheil ris a鈥 ch脿nan oir bha i aig p脿rant no seana-ph脿rant: well disposed towards the language because it was spoken by a parent or a grandparent; airson dealbh a thogail de shoidhne dh脿-ch脿nanach: to take a picture of a bilingual sign; bha am post a鈥 l矛bhrigeadh litrichean: the postman was delivering letters; chuir e uinneag a charbaid s矛os: he lowered the window of his vehicle; th脿inig g脿ire mh貌r air aodann: a big smile came across his face; thuig e mi: he understood me.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

Since returning to Scotland from my first trip to Nova Scotia, several people have asked me how different the Gaelic is there compared to our own. The answer is no more different than Canadian English is from Scottish English. They have the occasional word we don鈥檛 use or that is employed differently 鈥 in both languages. But essentially it is the same language and perfectly intelligible. I would recommend all Gaelic speakers in Scotland take a trip to Nova Scotia to seek out fellow Gaels there. I hope that in the near future, some entrepreneurs will establish a Gaelic-based tourism industry that increases the links between our communities in each country.

Gn脿thas-cainnt na Litreach

鈥橲 e sin cuspair deasbaid airson latha eile: that鈥檚 a debate for another day.
