Litir do Luchd-ionnsachaidh 783

Bha mi ann an d脿 Chn貌ideart o chionn ghoirid. Anns a鈥 Ch猫itean, bha mi ann an Cn貌ideart ann an Canada. Anns an 脪gmhios bha mi anns a鈥 Chn貌ideart th霉sail, air taobh an iar G脿idhealtachd na h-Alba. Tha an d脿 Chn貌ideart snog, ach gu math eadar-dhealaichte bho ch猫ile.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Ann an Canada, tha Cn貌ideart 鈥 Knoydart 鈥 air rubha air taobh an iar-thuath t矛r-m貌r na h-Alba Nuaidhe. Tha e air a chuairteachadh le coille n脿darrach ann an sg矛re a bha uaireigin l脿n G脿idhlig. Tha soidhnichean-baile d脿-ch脿nanach anns an sg矛re, agus tha beagan dhen ch脿nan ann fhathast.

Tha carragh-cuimhne ann an Cn貌ideart a tha car coltach ris a鈥 charragh air Bl脿r Ch霉il Lodair faisg air Inbhir Nis ann an Alba. Chan eil e cho m貌r ris a鈥 charragh Albannach, ach tha an t-aon chumadh air. A h-uile bliadhna, bidh daoine a鈥 tighinn cruinn c貌mhla air an l脿raich seo anns a鈥 Ghiblean. Bidh iad a鈥 comharrachadh agus a鈥 cuimhneachadh Bl脿r Ch霉il Lodair agus a鈥 bhuaidh a thug sin air na G脿idheil.

Goirid 脿s d猫idh dhomh tilleadh a dh鈥橝lba, chaidh mi fh矛n 鈥檚 mo bhean don Chn貌ideart againn fh矛n. Bha deireadh-sheachdain againn ann an Sgiathairidh, a tha faisg air Ceann Loch Shubhairne air cladach a deas an locha. Bha sinn a鈥 fuireach ann an taigh a th鈥 air a ruith mar taigh-aoigheachd le cupall 貌g.

Abair gun robh e math. Bha deagh sh矛de ann, bha biadh math ann agus bha sinn ann an 脿ite air leth br猫agha. Tha Loch Shubhairne air beulaibh an taighe, agus tha beanntan 脿rda ceithir-timcheall air. Tha an t-脿ite 脿s aonais an dealain, ach d猫 an diofar? Bha e s矛theil, s脿mhach, b貌idheach. Ch貌rd e rinn gu m貌r.

Nuair a tha sinn a鈥 feuchainn ri ainmean-脿ite na sg矛re sin a thuigsinn, feumaidh sinn cuimhneachadh gun robh na Lochlannaich ann fad 霉ine mh貌r. Tha sin follaiseach bho ainmean nam bailtean. Tha feadhainn Gh脿idhlig ann, leithid Inbhir Aoidh agus An Corran. Ach tha feadhainn eile ann, leithid 脌rnasdal agus B脿rrasdal, a tha gu follaiseach Lochlannach.

Agus, cho math ri sin, thug an t-Seann Lochlannais buaidh air na h-ainmean G脿idhlig. Mar eisimpleir, ch矛 sinn ainmean beinne mar Buidhe Bheinn agus Ladhar Bheinn. Nam biodh na h-ainmean seo a鈥 buntainn a-mh脿in ri dualchas nan G脿idheal, bhiomaid an d霉il gur e Beinn Bhuidhe agus Beinn Ladhrach, no a leithid sin, a chitheamaid air na mapaichean.

Agus Sgiathairidh fh猫in. Air c霉l a鈥 bhaile, anns an robh uaireigin grunn theaghlaichean a鈥 fuireach, tha beinn. 鈥橲 e Sg霉rr Sgiath 脌irigh an t-ainm oirre. Ann an d貌igh, tha an t-ainm a鈥 d猫anamh ciall. Bhiodh Sgiath 脌irigh a鈥 ciallachadh 鈥榯he shieling sheltered by the mountain鈥. Agus 鈥檚 e sin a th鈥 ann. Bidh a鈥 bheinn a鈥 d矛on a鈥 bhaile bhon ghaoithe as cumanta.

Ach chan e 鈥楽g霉rr Sgiath 脌irigh鈥 a chanas daoine ris a鈥 bheinn. Canaidh iad 鈥楽g霉rr Sgiathairidh鈥 鈥 the mountain of Skiary. Chanainn gur e ainm a鈥 bhaile a th脿inig an toiseach 鈥 nuair a bha e fhathast na 脿irigh. An 脿irigh a bh鈥 aig fear Skith, 鈥檚 d貌cha. Ged a th脿inig an eileamaid 鈥揳谤测 bhon Gh脿idhlig don Lochlannais, 鈥檚 e ainm Lochlannach a th鈥 ann an Skiary. Rinn na G脿idheil n脿dar de dh鈥檃th-chruthachadh air an ainm a r猫ir n貌san na G脿idhlig.听

Abairtean na Litreach

a鈥 feuchainn ri ainmean-脿ite na sg矛re sin a thuigsinn: trying to understand that area鈥檚 place names. Note the different word order in each language. English places the two verbs (the gerund and the infinitive) adjacent to each other. Gaelic, on the other hand, starts the sentence with the verbal noun (roughly equivalent to a gerund) and ends it with the infinitive, separating the two verbs with the remainder of the sentence. Remember this difference 鈥 it鈥檚 still a very important part of the language.

Gn脿thas-cainnt na Litreach
