Crucial Vinyl: Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon

Don selects Pink Floyd's 1973 classic The Dark Side of the Moon as his Crucial Vinyl. His other selections cross time, space and genre.

Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl from his collection. Also known as his 'C.V.', he explains how he came across the album, picks three favourite tracks and explains why it means so much to him.

This week he selects Pink Floyd's 1973 classic, The Dark Side of the Moon.

Don days, "Anyway you cut it, this is a daddy of a record. The Dark Side of the Moon made use of every studio trick that was available at the time: multi-track vocals, loops, sequenced synthesizers etc. and hung it all on some really great songs.

The fact that, lyrically, it had a social commentary thing going on also added to its impact - which was considerable, particularly when you listened back on a decent 'hi-fi' (essential in the seventies), and, as for listening on a good set of headphones... forget about!

I distinctly remember listening to this record in a darkened room with my rasta brethren in a somewhat 'relaxed' state, and being totally blown away as it took you on a sonic journey that, without a doubt, is a total trip."

As ever, Don's other selections cross time, space and genre, ranging from brand new releases to classics and lesser-known gems from decades past coming from the UK, the USA, Jamaica and beyond.
