Paul Gambaccini blends digital tracks from the week's US charts of songs, albums, R&B, country and rock hits with LP and singles tracks from the last six decades.
Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.
Each week, songs are played connected to members of 'The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame'. Continuing our alphabetical look at the list, we hear 'Truckin' by the Grateful Dead and 'American Idiot' by Green Day. In 'A Matter Of Life And Death', we celebrate the birthday on this date in 1958 of country singer Tanya Tucker with her hit 'What's Your Mama's Name'. Paul pays tribute to Gary Richrath of REO Speedwagon, who has recently died, by playing one of the band's biggest hits -'Keep On Loving You'. 'It's Not The Same Old Song' highlights 'Tonight's The Night' by The Shirelles and a different song with the same title by Solomon Burke.
In the feature called 'Beyond The Sea', Paul plays a song from a UK artist's biggest selling album in America. Tonight, we hear tracks from LPs by Kate Bush and the Climax Blues Band. 'The Other Number Ones' are records that reached the top of the American chart in 'Cash Box' magazine, but not in the Hot 100 of the other US chart publication 'Billboard'. This week's examples are by J Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers and Stevie Wonder.
Our R&B number ones are from 1958 and now by Bobby Day and Janet Jackson featuring J. Cole. We hear Country number ones from 2007 and this week by Taylor Swift and Luke Bryan. Our featured past and present Rock number ones are by Don Henley and Elle King. The best-selling digital song of the week is 'The Hills' by The Weeknd.
