Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Richard Coles:

Julia Gog is Professor of Mathematical Biology at Cambridge University. I know this because she鈥檚 the go-to pandemic person for my local 大象传媒 news Look East. I first saw her on it some weeks ago.

Not only is she brilliant, translating the complexities of pandemic modelling into information I can understand, but there鈥檚 something about her that suggests wit, warmth, a winning way. I could imagine her triumphing in the Big Brother House, although the odds of her accepting the invitation are so infinitesimally small, calculating them would burn through the university computer鈥檚 six terabytes of RAM.

She speaks to us from her study. In the background there鈥檚 a comfy chair, bookshelves, and a piano - always a big plus for me - and on it an open book of music.

What are you playing, Professor Gog?, I wondered, and put the question to Twitter. Someone suggested I email her, on her university address, so I did.

鈥楧ear Professor Gog, please forgive the intrusion, but what is the music on your piano, as seen on Look East tonight, please?鈥

Almost immediately there came a reply, in the most cordial terms. It was Bach鈥檚 Goldberg Variations, composed for an insomniac nobleman in 1741. Warmest best wishes were exchanged.

And then on Wednesday evening Professor Gog appeared again on Look East. Again, there was music open on her piano. But what was it? I emailed her.

She replied, 鈥渢his time I was ready for you,鈥 and when I zoomed in I saw it was the sheet music for Don鈥檛 Leave Me This Way, the record I had a number one with more than thirty years ago when I was in The Communards.听

So often our digital interactions are like road rage - short-sighted, short-fused, mean-spirited - and a day on Social Media can feel like you鈥檝e done twelve rounds of cage fighting.

But it can be a place of wonderful brief encounters, life enhancing interactions, unexpected delights.

In church, before we go up for Communion, we exchange a sign of peace. A handshake normally, but in a time of COVID we sort of waggle our fingers at each other in a benign way. 鈥淧eace be with you鈥, we say, even if it is sometimes through gritted teeth.

It鈥檚 a reminder that as fellow human beings we owe each other the respect we consider our due.

We鈥檙e in this together, it鈥檚 up to us to make it work - peace be with you.
