This weekend, Jews across the world will celebrate Rosh HaShanah 鈥� the Jewish New Year.听 But it鈥檚 not much of party, more a time to think about the meaning of life and what we hope to accomplish in the year ahead. At Rosh HaShanah, people attend the synagogue who hardly come during the year.听 It鈥檚 a festival with a complex character 鈥� at once joyful and solemn, with beautiful melodies that are both introspective and hopeful for a wonderful year. This reminds me of one Rosh HaShanah when rabbi was standing at the door of his synagogue greeting people as they were leaving.听听
He grabbed an occasional visitor, Max, by the hand and said to him, 鈥楳ax, I think you need to join the army of the Lord鈥�.听 Max replied, 鈥榖ut I鈥檓 already in God鈥檚 army鈥�.听 The rabbi persisted, 鈥楽o why do I only see you in the synagogue on Rosh HaShanah?鈥櫶� Max whispered, 鈥楤ecause I鈥檓 in the secret service!鈥� The tension between celebration and contemplation, which seem to draw people back to the synagogue year after year, is hard-wired into Rosh HaShanah.听 We look back over the past year while looking forward to the new.听 While thinking of what we hope to accomplish in the year ahead, we may acknowledge all the things we failed to do last time around.听 And there鈥檚 a sense, which is captured in our prayers, that each of us, even the world, hangs in the balance, as we, and God Himself, takes stock of how we are doing.听
An ancient Jewish teaching puts it like this, 鈥榦n Rosh HaShanah, all those who walk the earth pass before God like lambs.鈥� I suspect that this year, as the pandemic continues, many of us have felt that tension 鈥� worry that we may become unwell, hope that things will start to improve, frustration, despair, optimism, all at once.听 And of course, so many have suffered real loss, whether an actual bereavement or serious illness, from which they may still be recovering.听 In my community, everyone knows someone who has died or was very sick from COVID-19. Rosh HaShanah encourages us to embrace those complex feelings and in a blast of the shofar, a special ram鈥檚 horn blow on the festival, to send them heavenward with our hopes for a better year.听 Here鈥檚 a preview!
