Pause For Thought
There are certain people (I find) whose warmth, generosity and sheer humanity make me want to be a better person – I don’t mean more successful, I mean better…more alive on the inside. Maurice Smith was such a person. It’s exactly a year since I last saw him and sadly, he passed away at the end of April, aged 93, still sporting his marvellous crop of red hair. Maurice was a Christian speaker and writer who never really found a comfortable place in church and organised religion; he was at odds with systems, institutions and inflexible ideas about God. He never used highfalutin religious jargon; he even disliked being labelled ‘Christian’.Ìý
‘I’m simply Maurice’, he would say; ‘someone trying to find his way.’ He was what I’d call an everyday mystic – someone whose knowledge of God stemmed not from books, traditions and doctrines but from personal experience in the school of life. For him, faith was something felt, something rooted in goodness. ‘If we can love and be kind to fellow humans and animals’, he said, ‘then, all the rest is window-dressing.’ Among his many writings, the book I love best describes the ‘art of going nowhere’ – it’s not a manual for couch potatoes, more a guide to inner contentment: release from the frenzied need to acquire and achieve. By nature, I’m a manic kind of person. I find it hard to sit still, to still my mind, to stop planning the next venture.Ìý
The habit traces back to childhood; my dad always said I had ants in my pants. Then as a teenager I always needed to be going somewhere, doing something, starting something up. And to be honest, I’m still a bit like that. But Maurice reminded me of what I miss when I forget to stand and stare, to sit still and breathe, to notice the precious people and things I take for granted. Visiting Maurice last year, observing his joyous contentment in caring for his wife with Alzheimer’s despite the obvious effects of his four strokes, I reflected on his mantra: ‘Stop waiting for life to happen…This is it!
