Food on the run
Gentoo penguins are superbly adapted to swimming. They 'porpoise' - leaping out of the water to reduce drag and to get a good view of the shore as they approach land. They nest on beaches and flat ground, as they aren't adept at climbing rocks and steep land. Gentoo adults force their chicks to chase them for food, as it's a way to sort out the stronger and weaker chicks. They lay two eggs, but in times when food is scarce the gentoos might only be able to find enough food to feed one chick, and so will leave the weakest to starve. Gulls and skuas try to steal fish from the penguins.
