Croc immunity
At the peak of the dry season an anthrax epidemic sweeps through the crowded hippo colony, killing dozens. The smell of death carries in the current and within a few hours a hippo carcass has attracted more than a hundred crocodiles from far downstream. Their ultra-efficient immune system allows these reptiles to eat the diseased meat without getting sick themselves. There's a distinct pecking order so the smaller crocodiles hang back, while their elders guzzle and gulp down the flesh, shadowed by a hopeful heron, on the lookout for fish. But it's the croc's day and the heron remains disappointed.
