With a sensitive nose for sniffing out prey, keen eyesight, sharp hearing, thick fur to keep out the cold and claws as sharp as a tiger's, the polar bear is a formidable predator. An adult male can weigh over half a tonne and stands two metres high at the shoulder, and is the largest carnivore in the world. Roaming the Arctic lands during the winter months, male bears hunt on the ice for seals, while the pregnant females spend their time in dens beneath the snow. During November, a female polar bear will walk away from the sea ice and move inland to the hills and valleys, to areas where the snow has formed drifts. Here she will dig out her den, living underground for almost four months over the winter, until the March light encourages her to surface again.
