Coming out
Large male polar bears often avoid steep slopes, so females choose them for their den sites as they're particularly secure. Yet, she is still wary when she finally emerges with her cubs after a long winter. At first the cubs stay at the den entrance, watching their mother loosen up after a winter spent in the cramped den. Within a few days the mother will take them on short outings to strengthen their legs, ready for longer journeys across the sea ice.
