Mud bath
African elephants use mud to protect their skin from insects and the sun.
It is early afternoon and the sun is at its hottest. Time for the elephants to cool off. As part of their daily routine for grooming, the elephants take a mud bath and they really enjoy it. After coating themselves in mud, they come out and throw sand and dirt over themselves to protect against the heat of the sun and insects. Nandeepa is a baby elephant with buck teeth and she has managed to cover almost the whole of her body. An incredible thing about elephants is how they can contort themselves into any position. Circus trainers are simply playing on their natural behaviours. An elephant learns from its family so these orphaned elephants must re-learn much of what they've lost. Geeka鈥檚 latest role, for example, is that of allo-mother. Her maternal instinct is so strong that she must be around baby Miss B every moment she can. As soon as they get out in the morning the little females start huddling around Miss B. Meanwhile she must learn that they鈥檙e bigger than her and that sometimes they play a little rough.
