Monty Don sows beetroot and plants shallots into cell trays
Monty Don’s Herefordshire clay soils are fertile but slow to warm in spring. Sowing seed direct into the soil at this time is not an option for Monty; he starts his seed off in trays and cells in the protective environment of the greenhouse. Monty sows beetroot ‘Boltardy’. It is a globe type so is ideal for growing in pots or containers and is resistant to bolting. He plants his shallots into cell trays to give them a head start.
