In the second part of the scene, Chris finally confronts his father about his past actions. He realises he does not know his father at all: 'What kind of man are you?' In turn, this makes him reflect on himself and his actions: 'What must I do to you?'. Joe attempts to defend himself, but in doing so, reveals the lies and moral cowardice that lie at the heart of the family and national life in post-war America.
