'The Charge of the Light Brigade' - background
A brief introduction to the events of the Charge of the Light Brigade. We listen to a dramatised reading of an eyewitness account of the charge by Richard Temple Godman, a young cavalry officer.
In 1854 during the Crimean War, a brigade of British Horsemen charged headlong into a barrage of Russian gunfire after a miscommunication in orders. 200 British soldiers were killed but the event would go down in history as the ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’, immortalised in films, songs, newspapers articles, letters, paintings and poems.
