Edward VI attacks the belief in purgatory
This clip explains that the new king, Edward VI, was a committed Protestant reformer. Unlike his father, Henry VIII, who began the Reformation to sort out his domestic problems, Edward believed absolutely in Protestantism. He began by attacking the Catholic belief in purgatory. Edward’s attacks devastated those who believed that by saying prayers, a soul in purgatory could be saved from hell. To try to get round Edward’s reforms, Lancashire Catholics lit fires on All Souls’ Night.
