Viking place names
Presenter Paul Coia travels by car around Britain explaining that many British towns were given names by the Vikings. This suggests that they came to settle as well as to raid and fight. The Viking word for settlement is 'by' so place names ending in 'by' like Selby indicate a place where the Vikings settled. York is another Viking name, and 1,100 years ago it was the largest Viking settlement in the world.
