Longships
Longboats were used for war. Both sails and oars were used to move the longboat, and a steer board or rudder was used to steer it. This word survives today as 'starboard', meaning the right side of a boat. A great deal is known about longboats from the work carried out by archaeologists. Important Vikings were often buried in their ships. Some people say that the Gokstad ship was the most beautiful ever built.
