Industry arrived in Swansea during the 18th century thanks to an abundance of fuel, coal and water in south Wales. Swansea became the centre of the metallurgical industry which expanded into the 19th century. Within four miles of the centre of Swansea there were 150 blast furnaces, smelting and refining over 40 different types of metal from various imported metal ores. By the end of the 19th century, Swansea was once producing 90% of the world's copper, almost all of the world's zinc and 75% of the world's tin plate.
