The Odyssey: opening lines (audio)

The opening lines of Chapman's translation of Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ is read by Claire Higgins. This extract provides a summary of Ulysses' (Odysseus) trials and journey home from Troy to Ithaca. It details his attempts to protect his own life and that of his crew during his divinely imposed exile when all others had returned home safely. It recalls his stay with Calypso and the argument that arose amongst the immortals regarding how long Neptune (Poseidon) was permitted to delay Ulysses' return home to Ithaca.
