Cyril Smith abuse "victims" may sue Liberal Democrats
A lawyer representing alleged victims of the politician Sir Cyril Smith has said they could take legal action against the Liberal Democrats if it's proven the party knew about abuse allegations against the former Rochdale MP and failed to act.
Alan Collins from Slater & Gordon is representing six alleged victims. Police are investigating claims that Sir Cyril, who died in 2010 aged 82, repeatedly abused children during his 40 year career in politics.
Seven former pupils at Rochdale's Knowl View residential school have alleged they were sexually and physically abused from the 1970s onwards, police have said.
In a statement the Liberal Democrats said :"Cyril Smith's acts were vile and repugnant and we have nothing but sympathy for those whose lives he ruined. His actions were not known to or condoned by anyone in the Liberal Party or the Liberal Democrats."
