‘If we get the early years right, the rest takes care of itself’
Research from the charity Kindred suggests nine in ten parents believe their child is prepared for starting school, but teachers say one in three children are not.
This is due to lack of basic skills such as being able to use the toilet and being able to make their needs known to teachers.
The charity’s director Felicity Gillespie told 5 Live’s Rachel Burden why parents should start teaching these skills to their children before they turn two.
‘It is by far the most impactful period of a child’s development. Parents are children’s first educators. Talking about educating as starting at Key Stage 1 when we’re five is just too late’.
