A mother of two, who went on trial charged with poisoning her daughter by using alternative medicine, says the ordeal has been "horrendous" and "devastating".

Mary Kidson, from Herefordshire, believed her daughter (who cannot be named for legal reasons) suffered from hormone deficiencies - but several doctors and consultants disagreed.

After seeking help from a Belgian doctor specialising in hormone therapy, her daughter was given legally imported medicines and in Mrs Kidson's words, "thrived".

But prosecutors said she had given the girl a "cocktail" of drugs that had endangered her life and her daughter was taken into foster care.

Mary spent six months on remand in prison - but the judge at Worcester Crown Court later cleared her after ruling "there was no case to answer".

The 55-year-old said she was trying to do "the very best" for her daughter, who she says is still in care and is "desperate" to see her.

Herefordshire County Council said decisions to place children in care were taken by the family courts after considering evidence by experts, parents and the young people involved.

They said they were in contact with both parents about the next steps of the case.
