'Heavy' armed police response as cow is shot dead
A freelance photographer has described the dramatic moment a North Tyneside community was brought to a standstill - by a cow. The animal escaped, along with two others, from a farm in Wallsend on Sunday.
Armed police and a helicopter were sent to the area, making the area look more like a scene from a Hollywood movie, before a marksman shot the cow dead.
John Millard took a photo of it in the seconds before it died and told 5 live: "I stood on a bin to get a good viewpoint with a long telephoto lens of this cow. I thought I'd get the shot of this cow standing there, just eating and then - crack - it hit the floor. And that was it. It was done."
Northumbria Police say the animal was highly distressed and posed a danger to the public.
