St Lukes, Fly Tipping and Austerity
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
There are fears this morning that the development of a hospital in Leicestershire - which has been discussed for almost 30 years - could now be shelved altogether. Calls for the construction of St Luke's Hospital in Market Harborough started in 1987 - but after a series of delays and collapsed deals - it continues to be a void in the town. The most recent delay comes after the NHS announced they could not get on with the project - because it hadn't signed-off the required tenancy agreements. We all know that fly tipping isn't welcome anywhere in our area: it can ruin natural wildlife habitats in our countryside and make our neighbourhoods in our towns and city appear dirty and run down. But in the last 5 years alone there have been more than 36-thousand incidents recorded in Leicester alone, costing the council 1.2 million pounds - so it's no surprise we are being urged to use the appropriate waste centres and services in the city to help prevent unsightly mess appearing in our areas. At least four coaches full of protestors will leave Leicester tomorrow to join a national demonstration in central London calling for an end to austerity. A group called The People's Assembly is behind the action. It describes itself as a broad united national campaign against austerity, cuts and privatisation in our workplaces, community and welfare services - and it's linked to NO political party.
