Nick Miller: 'Hit head then broke British hammer record'
The Commonwealth Games silver medallist Nick Miller has broken the 31-year-old men's British hammer record.
The 22-year-old threw 77.55m at a meeting in Sweden, a whole centimetre better than the previous record set by Ron Bowden in May 1984.
It was also an improvement on his own personal best of 76.97m.
Miller achieved the record with his first attempt at the Karlstad GP and it was enough for the Cumbria-born athlete to win the hammer competition.
He revealed that the record was all the more remarkable as he'd felt groggy during the competition after falling over in the bathroom.
"I slipped and headbutted the sink in the bathroom this morning," he said. "So I had a throbbing headache all day. So I wasn't really thinking about anything. I felt like I was kind of punched in face a few times to be honest."
