Labour, Janner and Rugby World Cup
Martin Ballard sits in alongside Jo to start your day with the latest news and updates.
The reckoning begins for Leicester West MP Liz Kendall, and the other three candidates in the Labour Party leadership contest vote this morning. Ballot papers are being sent out from today to those eligible to vote for the party's next leader. Six hundred thousand ballots are being sent out amid further signs of growing alarm about the prospect of a Jeremy Corbyn victory from his rivals. Liz Kendall has urged her supporters not to give their second or third preferences to Mr Corbyn. But she doesn't have the backing of her two fellow Labour MPs in Leicester. Lord Janner is expected to make his first appearance in court this morning (Friday) to face 22 charges of child abuse. The former Labour MP, who has dementia, has been ordered by a senior District Judge to appear at Westminster magistrates court despite last-minute attempts by his lawyers to block the hearing on the grounds that it would breach his human rights. Today's appearance is expected to be very brief and will pave the way for a trial at Southwark Crown Court, likely to be later this month. The countdown to the Rugby World Cup continues this morning and the tournament's biggest star is in town! The prestigious Web Ellis Cup has been in the City. Yesterday it touched-down at the National Space Centre and today the 大象传媒 Leicester Studio.
