Women's Institute, Redhill & East Midands Trains
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
A hundred years of 'Jam and Jerusalem' - the Women's Institute celebrates its centenary today. But, despite its reputation of village fetes with homemade jam and cakes, the WI has more radical roots. Formed on the 16th of September 1915, its mission was to support rural life and to help with food production as World War One raged on in Europe. Over the last 100 years the organisation's aims have broadened and it is now the largest women's voluntary group in the UK.
Also, Leicestershire and Rutland are blessed with some wonderful green spaces. But now enquiries are being made to see if a nature reserve could be created in the middle of a busy city roundabout. The Red Hill circle, on the border with Birstall, is used by thousands of drivers every day, but is also regularly used by groups of travellers - who set up camp there.
And, the government has announced that East Midlands Trains has had its franchise to run services through Leicester and Leicestershire to London renewed. The licence comes with a pledge to invest 拢13m on improving services, including better timetables, improved customer information at Leicester station and better accessibility to stations. East Midlands Trains' parent company Stagecoach Group will pay the government 150 million pounds to run the franchise from October 2015 to March 2018. It comes as a group of local politicians and business representatives leave Leicestershire for the capital later -- trying to find out exactly when electrification of the midland mainline will start.
