Lib Dems, Bridge and The Best TV Ads
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
Its fair to say that the General Election in May this year virtually decimated the Liberal Democrat party. From having its most prominent position as a part of the Coalition government with 57 seats, it was a bumpy fall from grace after this year's election, when the party held on to only 8 seats in parliament. But now the troops have had some time to regroup and they've gathered together in Bournemouth with their new leader Tim Farron for their annual conference.
Also, Is Bridge a game or a sport? That's the question that's in the news today as a judicial review opens into the decision by Sport England to refuse to recognise the card game as a sport. But does it matter what it's called, and why? Well, the Charity Commisssion considers it a sport, so does the International International Olympic Committtee, but at the heart of the matter is money. Because it's a game, VAT is charged on all competition entry fees unlike other parts of Europe. This makes it more expensive for people to play and in Leicestershire alone around 1,000 people take part.
And, today is the 60th Anniversary of the first TV advert. From the "PG Tips" chimps to the Hovis boy and the "John Lewis" Penguin, many of us have a favourite advert that brings back childhood memories. We look back at some classic ads from over the years.
