Garendon, Volkswagen & The Rutland Rumble
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
A somewhat controversial and massive new housing development has been given the go-ahead in the North of Leicestershire. At a planning meeting last night, members of Charnwood Borough Council approved the building of 3200 homes on acres of green land between Loughborough and Shepshed. The joint venture between developers William Davis and Persimmon Homes will also include schools, shops, and industrial estate and even a couple of traveller sites. But its not going to come as good news to campaigners living near the site, who had previously described the plans as "unfair, unviable" and effectively the building of a 'new town'.
Also, Volkswagen is facing a series of criminal investigations in the United States, after admitting that software in its diesel cars helped the company cheat emissions tests. New York's Attorney General says several American states are working together on an inquiry. Eleven million vehicles around the world could be affected by the scandal - it's not known how many, if any, are in the UK. The board of the German car giant Volkswagen will meet later today. Reports suggest the company's Chief Executive, Martin Winterkorn, has lost the support of key investors.
And, the British Geological Survey has confirmed there's been an earthquake of magnitude 2.8 in Rutland, at around 10.40 yesterday evening.
It's the fourth earthquake felt in England's smallest county since April last year.
