Towpaths, TUSC & Helping Hands

Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.

The whole image of life on the waterways is an idyll of calm and tranquility, but far from being an oasis of quiet, some of the canal towpaths running through Leicestershire are more like a stretch of Tour De France. Well that's at least the views of the Canal and River Trust who say that our towpaths are busier than ever, with a whopping 360 million visits nationally last year. So with record numbers using towpaths, the Trust is calling on people in Leicester to bring back good ol' courtesy when sharing the space. And its hoped a humble duck can help to tackle the problem.
Also, national political party leader was in Leicester earlier this week - not surrounded by the usual high security and publicity - but on a simple mission to speak to local supporters. You may remember the name Dave Nellist, the former Labour MP and city councillor in Coventry, deselected from Labour before the 1992 election for being too left-wing. Well, he now leads the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition (TUSC), which stood candidates across Leicester in the local and parliamentary election earlier this year - but with little electoral success. And with fellow left-winger Jeremy Corbyn now leading Labour, our Political Reporter Tim Parker asked him if it was the coalition was still needed.
And, a local charity which has helped thousands of people in Leicestershire is now in need of help itself. Helping Hands is based in South Wigston and has been advising people in crisis for 18-years, but now faces closure in just a few months because of a lack of money. In the past, funding has come from Oadby and Wigston Borough Council, local trusts, the National Lottery and donations from local businesses. But that's all quickly running out- leaving thousands of vulnerable people with no where to turn.
