Lip Reading, Business Rates & Baseball

Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.

It's a condition many of us assume is linked with older age, but it's thought around sixty thousand people across Leicestershire and Rutland are struggling with hearing loss. Now, there's a fear that there will be a future epidemic with thousands at risk of developing hearing problems. One lip-reading teacher in the County says our increased use of electronic devices, like headphones is creating huge problems, with younger people particularly at risk.
A Leicestershire fertility specialist is suggesting Asian couples who are having problems conceiving could consider using white donors to have a baby. Neelam Potdar, a gynaecologist at Leicester Fertility Centre, says because there is such a shortage of Asian egg and sperm donors, Asian couples are waiting many years, sometimes longer than people of other backgrounds, to start their families. Her suggestion comes as Leicester Fertility Centre announced that they currently have a surplus of eggs available to women who want babies, but that these eggs are mostly from white women.
Also, fancy an extra 拢90 million? According to some estimates, that's exactly what Leicestershire could be receiving under plans to allow it to keep all the business rates raised here. The Chancellor of the Exchequer announced the proposals yesterday at the Tory Party conference in Manchester.
And, here in Britain, Baseball is a sport we usually leave to our American cousins, while we enjoy a sensible game of rounders. But a baseball club in Leicester is hoping for a big boost in members if the sport is included in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Baseball was recently recommended for inclusion in the Games and a final decision is due at the International Olympic Committee Session in Rio next summer.
