Mad Friday, Vouchers & The Last Coal Mine

Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.

Tonight is the last Friday before Christmas and it's set to be one of the busiest nights of the year, filled with Christmas parties and revellers heading off for a night on the town. But whilst many of us let our hair down, there are some that take it just a bit too far. East Midlands Ambulance Service has warned that excessive drinking causes immense pressure on them. In fact last year on the final Friday before Christmas, it took more than 2400 calls. That's one every 35 seconds and 20% more than on a regular Friday evening!
Also, getting a bargain is something we all like to do, but a Leicestershire woman has has taken bargain hunting to the extreme. Jennifer Drew from Ashby De La Zouch has bagged herself over 拢570 of Christmas presents and goods for just over four quid! How has Jennifer done it? By zealously using every coupon and voucher she can to get those bargains.
And, the last deep coal mine in Britain is closing today, with the loss of more than 400 jobs. Kellingley Colliery in Yorkshire opened 50 years ago. Chris Kitchen worked there for 20 of those years - his father retired after a mining accident, and his grandfather was killed underground. He's now the general secretary of what remains of the National Union of Mineworkers.
