We're here to help East Midlands musicians
鈥淎re swears allowed in songs?鈥� 鈥� Ty, Lenton.
The short answer is 鈥渘o鈥�. We鈥檒l explain why in a moment if you鈥檙e interested. When you upload a song to 大象传媒 Introducing you should ensure that it contains no bad language or otherwise offensive lyrics.
As we broadcast on 鈥渢errestrial radio鈥� (FM, DAB etc) we can easily be picked up in homes and cars with children in. For that reason, we鈥檙e governed by rules which are much stricter than those imposed on internet stations and streaming services. The fine that we face is huge if we break these rules.
Even after 9pm we cannot broadcast bad language. Unlike TV, there is no 鈥榳atershed鈥� for radio.
We advise that when you go into the studio you record or produce a radio edit. This can simply cut out the offending words, keeping the track running to avoid awkward silences. The old-fashioned way was to 鈥渂leep鈥� the words, but it just sounds odd in the middle of a song. Another alternative is to reverse the offending word. 聽There are free editing apps available to do this. Check that you鈥檝e got every swear covered by listening back before uploading the track to us. It can help to put 鈥�(radio edit)鈥� at the end of the title. But we still have to check!
If you accidentally send in a song with a swear in it, we have to 鈥渢ag鈥� it on the uploader. These tracks won鈥檛 get aired anywhere. If we really like the track, we might take a copy and reverse the swear for our East Midlands show. But as the original on the uploader still contains the swear, we have no way to send it to stations like Radio 1, 1Xtra, 6Music etc so even though we love your track it won鈥檛 get forwarded to the national stations which always feels like a massive pity.
In short 鈥� make sure the tracks you send in are radio edits with no swears or other content which Is likely to offend. We cannot wait to hear your next track!
