Respectable and mild-mannered Colonel Godsacre served in the British Army in South Africa in 1881. Godsacre could scarcely believe his eyes when he came across a crashed spaceship in the South African veldt with an injured Ice Warrior on board, whom he quickly nicknamed ‘Friday’. With the military campaign over, Godsacre recruited a band of battle-weary British soldiers to mount an expedition to Mars. In exchange for help to return him to his home planet, 'Friday' offered Godsacre and his men the mining rights to Mars’ long-buried riches.
I think you’ll find, Captain, that I’m in command here.
However, unknown to the rest of the men, Godsacre had been economical with the truth of his army service. Although he claimed to have sustained an injury when he ‘caught a Zulu bullet’, the truth was later exposed by Captain Catchlove to be a wound sustained by his bungled execution for desertion! Catchlove held this information over him until the time was right to seize command of the mission. As 'Friday’s' own deception was exposed and Iraxxa and her hive were revived, Catchlove sought to escape Mars with as much loot as he could…
However, Godsacre finally proved he was no coward, when he took Catchlove’s life in order to save Iraxxa and offered his life to the Ice Queen in the hope of bringing an end to the fighting between the humans and her soldiers. Impressed by his courage at the end, Iraxxa offered to spare the humans and take Godsacre with her and her people in their quest to find a new home world.
