Aluminum Babe in session
"The best new record I've heard in years!" proclaimed Huw when he heard New York outfit Aluminum Babe's album 'Vitrified.' And then, by chance, he bumped into singer Anna at a train station.
"I got their album throught the post and loved the heartfelt, electro-tinged tunes," says Huw. "Weeks later I was queuing in Paddington train station and saw an Aluminum Babe sticker on the back of a guitar on someone's back. I went up to say hello, and it turned out to be Anna, lead singer with the band!"
Swedish-born Anna moved to New York and formed Aluminum Babe in 2001 when she met bassist Jorge. They released their debut EP 'Aluminum Babe' in May 2003 and completed the line-up with the addition of Darren and Jeff on drums and guitars.
When it comes to musical inspiration Anna cites the Sex Pistols, dance music and er, Alice Cooper as influences.
"I love his melodies!" laughs Anna. "My favourite album is Love It To Death. I saw him in New York. He does all kinds of strange stuff like walking around with inflatable dolls."
Sadly there'll be no Alice Cooper covers in the session tonight, but there will be several excellent electro-disco gems. Anna talks us through the tracks:
"The first song in session is called 'Standing and Leaving Goodbye', it's about me leaving New York all the time because I used to live there but I've been going back and forth cos I don't have a visa, I only have 3 months at a time!"
The second song is called 'Not Easy To Forget'. "It's about being stuck in a summer fling and not wanting to let go, " says Anna. Next up is 'Andy', a song about a guy who Anna isn't sure is 'the one'.
'Slip Slide' is about infidelity and how "sometimes its the right thing to do even if it doesn't seem that way."
Finally, the last song is called 'Everything To Me', recorded in a friend's studio: "it's about clubbing in NYC and looking for a mate."
The band have just finished their third UK tour. New single 'Everything 2 Me' is out now. This is Aluminum Babe's first session for OneMusic.
