Suicidal Birds in session
Suicidal Birds have the honour of being the first band to be played on the inaugural OneMusic show back in February. Says Huw: "They jump out on you and make an impact. The songs are frantic, odd, slightly skee-whiff, fun and dark. Just ace, really!"
Formed in Friesland, Holland a year ago, Suicidal Birds consists of Jessie on vocals/screaming/guitar, Chay on bass guitar/vocals, Sido on guitar and Roel on drums.
Armed with out-dated self-made amps, the 'Birds (the name inspired by the frequent number of birds flying into the window of singer Jessie's house) create a sound they call 'punk blues with a rock and roll flavour.'
Citing the likes of The Pixies and The Gun Club as inspiration, Suicidal Birds self-proclaimed 'sound-orgy' is described by the band as 'treacherously playful, exciting and inescapable... deeply rooted in the blues combined with the energy of punk.'
The result? Their debut album, 'Z-List' (Transformed Dreams).
Recorded by Jessie on her own in her studio deep in the woods of north Holland, Z-List captures the rough and readiness, weirdness and wildness that is so essential in rock and roll. Cult indie-rocker J Mascis liked it so much he invited the band to support Dinosaur Jr on his European tour.
They'll be playing four tracks from that album in tonight's session: Better Off, Another Day, Summerset Sun. ("I just wrote it in the Morning when I didn't sleep so much after a lot of partying," grins Jessie) and Me Animal, about madness and animals.
Listen out in particular for some horse noises... "There are lots of horses near where I live," laughs Jessie. "I felt I had to feature them somehow..."
