Papa Noel (Congo)

'Papa Noel has been there and thereabout in Congolese music for several decades but it has only been in the last few years that he has received much attention in the West. Over the last year he has been involved in some of the finest releases in the world music field. First of all his retrospective CD "Bel Ami" and the wonderful release of his acoustic performance with Adan Pedroso. A few months ago a band of veteran congolese musicians led by Papa Noel called Kekele released one of the albums of 2001 "Congo Acoustic". Howver the main reason for my nomination of this sublime musician is the fact that he nearly died a few months ago. He is on the road to recovery but the greatest boost to encourage him to return to active musical activity would be for him to receive this award, an award which would be fully justified.'
